Hi WA Friends!

Do you like songs with lyrics, or would you rather listen to all-instrumental music? Lyrics can shape how we understand and feel about a song, making the experience personal and deeply moving!

Song lyrics come in all different styles. Some people like storytelling songs that share experiences or tell a story. Others prefer abstract poetry in lyrics, where the words can mean different things to different people. Personal reflections can make a song feel more intimate, almost like the artist is speaking directly to you. There are also protest or political themes that send a strong message.

Here's a more in-depth look at what I'm talking about.

Storytelling: Painting A Picture With Words

Storytelling in music is a classic way for artists to connect with their audience. These songs bring you into a story - it's like listening to a friend tell you something exciting.

Think about Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" or Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road." These songs pull listeners into vivid worlds. The lyrics give us characters, struggles, and victories, making the songs feel like mini-movies.

If you love being taken on a journey, storytelling lyrics are probably your favorite.

Abstract Poetry: Finding Your Own Meaning

Abstract poetry in lyrics is all about letting listeners make their own interpretations.

Bob Dylan is great at this - his lyrics in songs like "Mr. Tambourine Man" are full of imagery that can mean different things to different people. Dylan's poetic style was so influential that he even won the Nobel Prize in Literature, which is a huge deal for a musician! Bob was one of Jimi Hendrix's favorite artists, and he covered two of his songs: "All Along The Watchtower" and "Like A Rolling Stone."

Another artist known for this poetic style is Thom Yorke from Radiohead. Their lyrics are often abstract, which lets you find your own meaning, making each listen feel fresh and different.

If you like metaphors and letting your imagination run wild, abstract poetry in lyrics is your thing.

Personal Reflections: Heartfelt And Intimate

Personal reflection lyrics are heartfelt, giving the listener a peek into the artist's soul. When an artist sings about their own experiences, it can feel like they’re sitting right next to you, sharing their deepest thoughts.

Adele's "Someone Like You" is an iconic example - it's raw, emotional, and beautifully personal.

Taylor Swift is another artist known for her reflective lyrics, often singing about her relationships and personal growth. These songs resonate deeply with fans because they come from real-life moments, touching on feelings we can all relate to.

Protest/Political Themes: Songs With A Message

Sometimes, music is a platform to speak out about issues that matter. Protest and political lyrics have the power to challenge us and make us think.

Bob Marley’s "Get Up, Stand Up" is an anthem for standing up against oppression, and it still inspires people today.

Another band who uses their platform to speak out is Rage Against the Machine, with songs like "Killing in the Name," which is full of defiance and political frustration.

If you like music that moves you to take action or question the status quo, protest lyrics are probably what you connect with most.

You know I love my instrumentals Frank.... most important for me!!!

But... a bit of poetry can have it's place in a quality track!

As long as it doesn't interfere too much with the instrumentals that is!!!

Rock On!!

😎🎸🍻😎

Haha, my thoughts exactly, Nick! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

Rock On! 🀘🍻

If it's melodically pleasing, I care little about the message, but I'm the type that wants to know what is being said. Even so, the lyrics will not stop me from listening to a song. Let's take Elton John's 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy' album. I don't know what he's talking about most of the time, although I know it's biographical. I do like the album, even though it was a relative flop.

Hi Dave

Yeah, I'm the same way. I lock in on the melodic and harmonic structure, and if I don't like that, then the lyrics are not going to save it for me. 😎

Frank 🀘🎸

Yep. I'll not reach the lyrics if I don't like the sound.

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜Ž

Great post, Frank! I'm mostly into romance lyrics and such but there are some very powerful theme songs in which are also good too. πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

"The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers:

You got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealing's done

Not just advice for poker, but life advice too. Quit while you're ahead, and get out while the getting is good!

I've never left a card table empty-handed, Frank. πŸ‘

Appreciate the post! 🀘🎸

Hi Isaiah

Yeah, Kenny Rogers wrote some really great tunes!

I'm not much of a card player, but my family is really hardcore about it. Lol πŸ˜†

Hi Frank

I'm going to go with my usual answer, I like most all lyrical styles and it depends on the song. The only style I don't care for is the Protest/Political style. But that is only my opinion.

Music has always been about positive vibes, good times and even humor at times, to me.

From as early as I can remember, my dad sang in the local barbershop chorus (The Capital City Chordsmen) in Lansing Michigan and several quartets as well. Whenever we went to a barbershop show, there was always humor involved. The quartets almost did a skit while singing a song, which was always the highlight for me. Great memories for sure! πŸ˜‚πŸŽ΅

Thanks for taking me back, Frank!! πŸ‘ And don't stop Rockin!! 🀘😎🎸

Tim 🎼

Hi Tim

Such great musical memories!πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž

As a child, I was mainly exposed to instrumental music like classical and jazz, but opera, too.

These days, all I really care about in a song is what the guitar is doing! Lol πŸ˜†

Rock On! 🀘
Frank 🎸

Hi Frank

As well you should, being a guitar player!! 🀣🀣

Keep Rockin!! 🀘😎🎸

Tim 🎼

Hahaha, it's kinda my obsession, Tim! πŸ˜‚

Rock On! 🀘
