YouTube just dropped a massive update to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) monetization thresholds, effectively doubling the entry requirements for incoming creators. If you are working toward monetizing a channel, here is what you need to know before these changes take effect.
The New YPP Monetization Requirements
Starting February 1, 2027, entry thresholds for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing are increasing:
- Watch Hours: 8,000 qualified watch hours within 365 days (previously 4,000).
- Shorts Views: 20 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days (previously 10 million).
- Subscribers: Remains unchanged at 1,000 subscribers with no time limit.

What Isn't Changing
- Existing YPP Creators: The new entry thresholds will not impact creators who are already monetized in YPP; your status remains locked in.
- Fan Funding & Shopping: Entry levels remain unchanged at 500 subscribers, 3,000 watch hours, or 3 million Shorts views.
- Revenue Splits: Core revenue splits remain standard at 55% for long-form content and 45% for Shorts.
Key Rules for Shorts, New Incentives & Revenue
- Shorts Revenue Baseline: Monetized creators must maintain a baseline of 10 million Shorts views over the trailing 90 days to participate in Shorts ad and Premium revenue sharing.
- Long-Form Protection: Dipping below the 10 million Shorts baseline will not drop a channel from YPP; long-form ad and Premium monetization remain active.
- New Incentive Programs for Smaller Creators: To support channels below the 10 million Shorts view baseline, YouTube is launching new targeted earnings models. These include YouTube Shopping bonuses, targeted brand deal incentives, and earnings boosts for starting or participating in cultural trends.
- Premium Light Revenue Boost: YouTube Premium Light is expanding to all countries where standard Premium exists. Premium Light subscriptions yield a 60% net subscription revenue pool for creators (compared to 30% for standard Premium, which factors in YouTube Music).
- Terms Agreement Deadline: Monetized creators will receive updated YPP agreement terms in YouTube Studio soon and will have six months to review and sign them to continue earning.
You still have a six-month window under the current 4,000 watch hour and 10 million Shorts view criteria before the February 1, 2027 rollout. Now is the time to push your content schedule, double down on watch time, and lock in your monetization status.
Cheers,
