Life in NL - The BIG Island! - this is worth a read!

I live on an island of half a million people. Some might say that's a pretty big island. But when you compare it to a state the same size in square land mass you realize how bif this island is! Newfoundland, where I call home, is the same size in geography as the State of Ohio. The big difference is Ohio is over 20 times the size in population! Newfoundland would rank as the fourth largest state in the USA!

Hey my American friends - it is pronounced NEW-FOUND-LAND and not NEW-FOUND-LIND as most Americans like to call us. It's okay though because when we hear people say that we know you are a tourist and act extra nice to get all your money!!!! - kidding! But we do still know!

It makes for a lot of travel and there is certainly a lot to explore. In fact if you look at the map of Newfoundland, there is no road access to a lot of places here and for a number of reasons.

1. We only have 500k+ people

2. There is SO MUCH ROCK! - You have to blast your way through it

3. There are tips and peninsulas everywhere!

4. Travelling from the Northern tip to The eastern most tip takes 11 hours.

Having said all this it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. In my 13 years here I have seen all kinds of sites. There are the sea arches formed over the thousands of years, the crashing waves, the puffins, the whales and of course the ICEBERGS! I have to say that is one of the most impressive sites. I can't forget SIgnal Hill either!

I went down to the shore a couple years ago and picked up an iceberg chunk! I took it home and broke it up and use it as ice in my drink. You would not believe how long your drink stays cold and DOESN'T get watery! It's truly an amazing site when I open up the freezer and see it. That iceberg chunk is the purest water on earth and it sat all that time on some of the saltiest water on earth!

Hockey is big in NL, so is Volleyball and Softball. What is also big is Cod Fishing and that is a HUGE joy, if we were allowed all the time! The government has a moratorium on that and you can read all about it. Makes me sour to think about it really! OH! and oh yes, hunting!

There are many crazy sites in NL and one that is unknown to a lot of Americans is the crash of a B36 Peacemaker in March of 1953. Read about it here: https://www.hiddennewfoundland.ca/burgoynes-cove-b36-crash. It is quite an amazing story and only 30 minutes from my backyard! If you want to see an amazing aerial view check out the drone flight done by an acquaintance Michael Legge.

This video above will also help you undertsand the rugged terrain they had to deal with in 1953, in the deep snow and cold. The walk is about 40 minutes in good weather just to climb the hill. PS. I get no royalties for this but when you see the video there leave a comment saying Corey B sent you - might get me brownie points! Oh Did I tell you this was the spot where your U.S. Military General Richard E. Ellsworth (Ellsworth Airforce Base) lost his life. He was on this plane!

Anyhow I just wanted to share about a place that while you are not allowed here right now due to Covid19 you are welcome when the world returns to a sense of normalcy!

We are in a situation aoursleves where we may have to leave this beautful place for work so this may be a bittersweet storyin a month - so maybe this has been therapy for me.

Happy Tuesday all - may you all become as COVID free as we have been for many weeks - life is normal in most ways here. It's when being on an island is GREAT!

Having the ocean outside your window doesn't hurt! Unless its 10 below and the wind is blowing in off the ocean! I choose to not think about that too much!

Here's a snap on one of the most breathtaking places, Trinity. You go there and ALL STRESS leaves your body!

... quaint, mystical & breath-taking rugged beauty! ....

Corey, this all sounds breathtaking and pristine!

I do have NewfoundLAND 🙂 on my Bucket List and will get there in time.
So sorry if you do have to leave.

Keep safe and well.

If we are here I'd tell ya to drop a line. People here treat everyone like family! There is nothing like a Sunday Dinner here in NL. And you have to try the fries, dressing and gravy. The signature dish here!

It all sounds divine, Corey!

The next stage of my travels around the world is to less travelled places like NL.
All I want to do is savour the earth's beauty.

You definitely have it there.
Do enjoy.

Cassi
