The "Winner First" Blog Writing Strategy

Back in the day, I think there was this subconscious tendency we had as content writers (yes we actually used to write our own content) where, to keep our readers on the page, we'd slowly reveal our content in a way that the answer to the main topic at hand was usually found somewhere from the middle to the bottom of the page.

That is NOT a thing anymore.

Think about it from your audience's point of view. You click a link looking for a specific answer, and now you have to sift through 1500 words to find that answer. To be honest, none of us would actually even go through the hassle of searching. If we don't see the answer immediately or the post looks convoluted, we bounce.

Never waste your readers' time.

This is where the Winner First strategy comes into play. Give the answer in the first 20% of your content. If you're reviewing a product, tell them if it's worth it in the second paragraph. If you're answering a "How-to," put the core solution right under the first heading.

Why do we do this? Because respecting your customer’s time is the ultimate trust builder. They came to you with a pain point, you provided the solution (or the "win") immediately, and now they're seeing you as a value creator. You’ve proven that you aren't just trying to trick them into staying on the page to inflate your "time on site" metrics. You're actually there to help.

Often times it's the beginner affiliate marketer who's afraid that by giving the answer away early, the reader will leave immediately. But the data actually shows the opposite. When a reader gets the "Winner" early, they relax. They stop hunting and startreading.

Once you’ve solved their immediate problem, they're far more likely to stick around for the "why" and the "how." You’ve established yourself as an authority who gets straight to the point. Now you use the rest of your post to elaborate on that answer thoroughly.

You still need high quality writing habits like short paragraphs, bold h2 headings, well placed images, bulleted lists for easy consumption, etc., but this is the icing on the cake. You're delivering value, delivering the "win", and your audience ill thank you for it by coming back for more.

  • Have you ever found yourself hiding the main answer at the bottom of your posts to try and keep people on the page longer?
  • As a reader, do you feel more or less trust toward a website that gives you the answer in the very first paragraph?
  • Take a look at your last three published articles. If a reader only had 15 seconds, would they be able to find the "Winner," or would they be hunting for the answer they're looking for?
  • If you knew that giving the answer early actually increased your conversion rate (even if it slightly lowered your time-on-page), would you have the courage to flip your writing style today?
