The Compound Interest of Building an Online Business

When I'm working a shift at the fire station, the nature of the job is 100% immediate. If there's a call, we respond. There's a clear beginning and an end to it. Help the patient, put the fire out, back to the station. But when I started building my website back in 2017, it didn't take me long to realize that this is a whole different type of undertaking altogether.

For most of us, for the first few months you're wondering if anyone even sees you, lol. I would spend DAYS researching and writing, way back in the olden times when we had to do all the writing and research on our own. If I was lucky, 3 people would maybe see my article and that's only because I shared the link on social media and the 3 people who saw it were my friends who were wondering what the heck I was writing about.

It's easy to feel out of it when you put in that kind of effort and see zero immediate return. But this is the nature of online business. You have to get your reps in and learn your way. You're Daniel-san painting the fence wondering when the heck you're gonna get to karate chop some dude in the neck.

Trust me. The karate chop is coming.

That article you publish today about a specific product, or that guide you spend all weekend perfecting doesn't just go away when you shut your laptop. It sits there. It quietly begins to work while you're sleeping, while you're out with your family, or while you're focused on something totally different.

Then one day, a trickle of traffic starts to happen. One or two clicks, then 10-12, then 60-80 in a day, then 500 in a day, then a THOUSAND. A year later, you look at your analytics, and you realize that a piece of content you wrote 18 months ago is still bringing in traffic and commissions. That's when you walk out your door and you find the first person you see and you karate chop the hell out of their neck. That's the payoff you've been waiting for and it's WORTH IT.

This is the compounding effect. You're essentially building a business that never takes a day off. Most people get all caught up in the get-rich-quick noise, but not you. You're waiting to karate chop your unsuspecting victim. Bad.

When you realize that the efforts you put in today show their results months from now, your mindset is finally right. Every post is a little worker you hired who doesn't need a salary, doesn't need a break, and just keeps showing up for you every single day. It's about doing work that continues to pay you long after you've finished it.

If you're just starting out, don't look for immediate results. And also don't just think results will happen if you're inconsistent or not treating this like a business. You can be two years in with zero results if you're practicing bad habits and not learning from your mistakes. That's a wake up call to yourself. "Hey, why am I spinning my wheels here? It's time to take this seriously with fresh eyes and see where I'm going wrong."
