How to Merge Blog Posts Without Losing SEO (And Rules For When to Do It)

If you've been blogging for awhile and you find that you have some redundant content, maybe in the past you've looked to consolidate your posts so that the new one is updated and refreshed and now the older one can be deleted.

Well, what about all the links to the old post? You don't want these to be broken, so plugins like Redirection are great for quickly redirecting any links to the old post and pointing them to the new one.

However, if this is done over and over and over again in your site, all the redirects can make it inefficient. The best, most efficient move on your website is to actually hunt down those old links and update them with the new url.

If you have 2 or 3 instances of this, that's not a problem.
But if that old post was a pillar post that had 80 or so links to it throughout your site, this would take hours.

Enter "Better Search Replace": a free plugin that does this chore automatically and easily. Check out the video and I can show you how quickly you can set this up.

Important:

If your old post was ranking well, had lots of engagement, tons of traffic, then you definitely don't want to just replace it and throw away all that hard work. You would only consider replacing old posts if they are thin posts, weren't getting traffic, weren't getting any engagement, etc.

Here are some rules of thumb you can follow, straight from Gemini:

The "Keep It" Rule (Do NOT Delete/Redirect)

  • The Traffic Test: If the old post is currently getting consistent daily traffic, do not delete it. Even if it’s older, it’s already a winner in Google’s eyes. Just update it with fresh info instead.
  • The Ranking Test: If the post is currently ranking on Page 1 for its target keywords, keep the URL exactly as it is.
  • The Backlink Powerhouse: If that specific URL has high-quality links from major websites (like news sites or top industry blogs), leave it alone. The risk of losing that "link juice" during a move is higher than the benefit of merging.

The "Consolidate It" Rule (Use Better Search Replace & Redirects)

  • Keyword Cannibalization: If you have two (or three) posts competing for the exact same keyword, they are fighting each other for rank. Merge them into the best one to create a single "Power Post."
  • The "Zero Traffic" Ghost: If a post has been live for 6+ months and has zero organic visits and zero backlinks, it’s "dead weight" (thin content) that can actually drag down your site’s overall authority.
  • Outdated/Ugly Branding: If the old post is formatted in a way that no longer reflects your brand (e.g., poor images, weird spacing, old writing style) and it isn't ranking, it’s better to move the "nuggets" of value to a modern, "skimmable" post.
  • Niche Evolution: If you’ve pivoted your focus (e.g., moving from "General Blogging" to "Micro Influencers"), your older, generic posts might be irrelevant to your current audience. Redirecting them to your new, relevant pillar content keeps your funnel clean.
  • The "Search Intent" Match: If the old post answers "What is [X]" and the new one answers "How to [X]," and you realize people only care about the "How," merge the "What" into a small section of the "How" post and redirect.
