Writing for an audience that you understand is easier because, well, you know how they think. You know what they want. You know what they are looking for, how they may respond, and what attracts them.

Generally speaking, it's easier to understand your audience if you are one of them. Choosing a niche you have some real life experience in will get you far.

So saying, imagine you are the one searching for a product or asking the question, and you arrive on your site. Would it help you?

Here are a few things to ask yourself to help make relevant content for your site.

  • What questions have I myself asked (or still ask) about this niche?
    • The chances are that someone else has needed to know exactly what you needed to know at some point. You did research back then to satisfy your own curiosity, so use that knowledge and previous work and experience to make it easier for the next person asking the exact same question. And create relevant needed content at the same time!
    • For example, I needed to know how to wrap my hands for Muay Thai. So I went online, and asked. Fill the need. :) I have since done my own How to Wrap article with (hopefully) effective keywording.
  • What do beginners need to know in this niche?
    • Chances are you were a beginner once, too. So, address - through experience - the things you first-handedly learnt are necessary to embark on your particular niche's adventure. Make it easier to start...
    • For example, I wanted to know what the traditional headdresses were called that Thai fighters wear before a fight. I had to do my own research, and have since put it into a handy Common Terms of Muay Thai article.
  • What do I find most difficult in my niche?
    • Often niches have common difficulties. Acknowledge how often one presents itself to you and you may find it is widespread and often talked about. Create content addressing this issue and providing solutions and options.
    • For example, bruising is a very big problem for me when training. And it isn't just me...everyone who kicks gets bruises, and the newer you are the more they hurt. I've written an article about bruising and how to deal with it.

Just asking these few questions will give you tonnes of content to write about that will be helpful, relevant and interesting to your reader.

What other questions can you guys think of that I missed? Let me know. :)

Thanks for reading, and all the best.

Elsie.

Thanks Martin, will do. :)

You are more than welcome my friend

This is excellent Elsie, putting yourself in the shoes of your audience and knowing what they would want to know is a great way to put your site or post together, especially if you are naturally a part of your audience yourself.

Reading forums in your niche to find out what others are asking in there is a great way to find out what the hot topics, questions and keywords for new posts are so that's what I'd recommend others to do.....create a post using the most talked about topic, the questions asked regarding that topic and the keywords used in those questions and you should get a winner!
