That depends on whether your target audience is from Australia or global. If you want to target Australia go with the .au for global with .com

Hi Elle,
I'm in Adelaide so I know exactly what you're talking about. A dot com dot au will just target Australians. If you want to be found by the rest of the world then you'll need a dot com top level domain.
When I search using Google I get a lot of dot com dot au sites in the results but if I lived in another country then I'd get results from that local area as well as the top level domains.
I've never had a dot com dot au but that's what my son uses. He is only targeting the local market with his business.
