And, I thank you in advance!

We don't want to mess up our website. Sometimes, we test on something and we really are not sure of the outcome. A siterubix is a great way to go for testings. This is what I usually do.

Thanks, betcha! Most of the answers here agree with this approach!

I put my site up on siterubix as a testing ground.

Good to know, Bob. When you transferred it to your own domain, did you lose followers as Pisquali suggests in a comment below?

I am not sure what you mean by followers. If you have built up a massive amount of traffic then I don't know what the impact will be.

The way I did it was to build a testing site use an arbitrary name on site Rubin. I then exported the content using Import/export feature on Wordpress , the imported to my new siterubix site, after doing my testing and was happy to move over I used WA's facility to move my siterubix site to my real domain. As yet I havent deleted the site on hostgator.

I hope that helps, you still have problems drop me a PM.

Bob

OK , now you have added the "rest of the story" for me, Bob.

Pisquali, below, mentioned "losing followers", I figured he meant "traffic", as you say.

So what you did was use a FAKE name for the testing site on Rubix. I like that idea. Others in this discussion have also said that they keep one or even several testing sites to go back and experiment with.

Staying with the experimental site (or sites) long enough to build up massive traffic is not the plan.

Thanks a bunch for the advice! I will PM you if necessary.

Elinor

P.S. I just found out from Glenda, below, that everything, including "followers" are transferred over to to your dotcom website. Then, if you need to do more testing, you set up another dummy website.

Thanks to Glendale for that, I wasn't sure.

Good question, I don't know the right answer to that yet, but I'm sure I will learn. I'm sure there is someone who knows, and can point you in the right direction here at WA. I have always gotten answers when I was unsure.

Several people in this discussion say they use the initial siterubix websites to test themes, plug-ins, various SEO tactics etc. and then when it is working properly they transfer the material to their own domain, usually a dot.com version of the siterubix. This is what I like as the best answer. They also said they may have 3 or 4 test sites so they can keep on fine-tuning before publishing on the .com website.

When I went Premium, I just went ahead to namecheap and bought my own domain, and did the .com because so many were saying it is better.

Maybe I will try that when I learn a bit more :)

I think it is a really good idea. I am going to be getting into this soon, and I can let you know how it goes. Keep in touch! Cheers

I did the same, and then got stuck as how to produce my new website with everything designed and working properly. Experimenting with a "dummy" website in siterubix appears to be the best answer to me.

Thanks. I need to remember now that I am Premium the sites are unlimited with siterubix. :)

I'd say use your domain. If you do happen to get it right then change from siterubix to domain you will lose your following.

Thanks for your input! After getting some answers (below) I intend to start with at least one rubix site as a TEST SITE before I set up my own domain. When I get it looking and working properly I will transfer it to my dot.com website. I don't intend to do this for a prolonged period of time, so if I lose some followers when I transfer, it should be minimal. I am most interested in making sure I have the best functioning theme and the right SEO setup for my purposes. I think to make functional changes like that to a dot.com website after the fact might lose even more followers.

Great, good luck.

If you have your siterubix site far enough along to actually have followers then you do not need to worry about losing any followers. The reason is that when you transfer from the siterubix domain to a dotcom domain hosted here... it is automatically forwarded to the dotcom. Additional site rubix site would be needed if you want a test site after that.
Glenda

More great information .... thank you, Glenda!!!

You have explained why I would need more than one test site: Because followers, along with everything else, are transferred to the dotcom domain. Then if I need to do more testing, I set up another siterubix and do any additional testing that is needed.

All the puzzle pieces are now in place.

Are we having fun yet? It's been a long day, and two sleepless nights, so time to grab some shuteye.

Goodnight all .............. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I actually never did a siterubix site first..... I don't like to waste time and I didn't think I would need to experiment somewhere else before bringing something to my site.... my approach is a kinda "get it right the first time" approach....but that is just my perspective :)).... Cheers!

You must be much more savvy with SEO than me! I don't think I can get it right the first time and did not want to be changing things around on my final website.

Thanks for your input!

Cheers back .... :)

A BIG FAT THANK YOU to all of you wonderful helpmates!! I will be able to sleep tonight! Or maybe crash this afternoon for a nap.

I published a siterubix site first, and experimented with it while going through the initial trainings. And after I published my first dot com domain, I kept the siterubix site, which I still use for experimentation with new plugins, themes, etc., before using things on my main site.

You all have made my day with this great information. Thanks Old Silly!! So I can keep the experimental one around to keep trying out new ways to go. The themes especially worried me, because I read some folks complaining about certain themes not working for them. A theme is a BIG thing to change without disrupting the website.

You are welcome, and I wish you much success.

Thank you!

I'm currently creating my first website utilizing siterubix - building it is easy - but still not index in google which I trying work out.

Ah, that is another question. I would go back in the lessons to find out about indexing ... or simply blog your question like I did here. Cheers

Ask the question already had I response so far.

You should ask it in a blog, just like I did here. Like this:
"How do I get my website indexed in Google?" People who know the answers will come to your rescue. Cheers

If you are new to online marketing, I suggest that you do and please do the video training in Get Started Here. I wish you success at WA.
I will be following you.

Thanks! I am doing the training and am flooded with info from members also. I really did not want to put up the final version with my dot.com name on it, before I work out all the nuts and bolts. I appreciate your input very much!!

setup both --- i setup 3 from start. You can use free one and transfer best ideas to other

Now that's a great idea. So, I don't have to go public until the second one (my .com website) is perfected. Is that correct?

Yup it's a great idea to set up a test site with siterubix so that you can test the theme, plugins or even experiment a little with css or html before using something on your .com. I've had two, three maybe four at one time using different themes to see how everything would react each step of the way!

That's what I was hoping to hear. It makes total sense and I can stop worrying about all the things whirling around in my head and TEST THEM OUT! Fantastic! Even 3 or 4 test sites. Love it. THANK YOU!

Yippers... no more sleepless nights...LOL!!!

OMG did you get that right!!! I didn't sleep a wink for the last 2 nights, but at least the idea to ask for the answer to my dilemma came out of all the thrashing around. LOL indeed! Sometimes you wonder about yourself. haha

Ohhhhh, can I relate. When I started here at WA I didn't have a clue about anything relating to websites, html, css or... whatever! I had built several PC's by that time but that's all hardware with minimal software. But this WA thing was a whole new world and doggone did I have some struggles. I can definitely relate to ya'. Don't ever lose sleep, just write down your thoughts or questions and then post your question the next morning. Test sites are a must... if they get broke and you don't have the time or patience to figure 'em out, just delete 'em and fire up a new one!

I love this place, ya' know? (-:

I finally DID get up about 4pm to whittle down my scrambled worries into one simple question. And look at what happened!! Sheesh. A pad of paper and pen will be on the nightstand from now on. When I design anything .... logos, storybook artwork, illustrations etc. I always make lots of ROUGH DRAFTS. That is how I work. So the rubix websites will serve as such. Cool Beans!

The WA community IS DEFINITELY ONE TO LOVE. :D

You are much more organized than I... you're gonna go far here...(-;
I used to have a pen and pad in my pocket at all times. Whenever I sat down to the PC or laptop I would put 'em right next to the mouse. Anytime I went camping and fishing they were always in my back pack. Well... that's pretty much the extent of my organization except for Excel. I use spread sheets for all of my content ideas, keywords and domain ideas. Reckon I do use test sites for rough drafts upon occasion. Dadgone, there just may be hope for me...LOL!!!
