Living north of Atlanta, should I get nervous about Irma?
As a Brazilian who has moved to the US a little over 1 year, dealing with hurricanes is a pretty big issue.
I've seen people here in Georgia totally relaxed, and others are stressed out, even evacuating already.
I wonder if my family and I should also get moving...
One thing that having a website has helped in this process is that I wrote a Post about the things we can do to get ready for a hurricane. Since my website (DescobriNaAmerica.com) is mainly for Brazilians and foreigners that move to the US, I thought that this would be of interest.
We decided that for now we're staying (there are also 4 cousins from Florida staying with us). We'll keep our eyes and ears wide open tracking Irma's path and what the officials advise us to do.
All my prayers for the ones who stayed in Florida and in the Caribbean.
Be safe and God bless.

Every storm is different, Eliane. When Hurricane Ike came ashore in Texas, the remants came thrugh here with winds at 70+ miles per hour (I am in Southern Indiana, 25 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky). I would watch the weather and listen to you local authorities. I doubt that they would call for evacuation that far inland, but you never know. Thoughts and prayers for all in Irma's path.
Hey, Joe.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
That's what we've been doing: watching the news and listening to local authorities.
Hopefully everything we'll be fine.
Looks like the storm center is predicted to veer to the west of Atlanta and move over Birmingham, Alabama. You will probably get wind/rain, but it shouldn't be severe. Just keep watching and listening. And praying for all affected.
Joe
Yes, Joe. The good thing is that now it's just a tropical storm.
Right now we're only getting light rain. Later on, it should get heavier.
We'll see.
Thanks!
Hi, Elaine! According to the Weather Channel, Atlanta is due to get hit by this hurricane. To be honest from what is being said by Irma coming from veteran meteorologists, this is to be taken seriously.
I'd think about getting out of the Atlanta area if I were you.

I would just follow the advice of your county. They usually have evacuation zones posted, Atlanta news conference, etc. Your county officials will have the latest information that pertains to where you live. Then follow the instructions.
Thanks, Darleen.
I'm still learning how to deal with this situation but things in the US are very organized. I feel there's a plan for everything.
We're paying close attention to what local authorities have to say.
Thanks!
