I dissected a $6K/mo Mac app and the moat has nothing to do with the product

Pulled apart a creator-tool business this week. Solo dev, $6K MRR, 14 months from launch, a decade of dead projects before that. Reddit said the lesson was "persistence." Reddit was wrong. Sharing the dissection because the actual lesson rewires how we should be picking niches.

What he built

The operator is a solo dev who shipped roughly 17 failed products between 2016 and 2024 before one stuck. The product is a macOS-only screen recorder for creators making short videos for X and YouTube.

  • Current revenue: $6,000/mo (30-day window)
  • Time from launch to $6K MRR: 14 months
  • Price: $79 one-time, lifetime updates, 3 devices, no subscription
  • Failed products before this winner: ~17
  • Launch thread on Reddit: 518 upvotes, 195 comments
  • Free tier: full features, watermark on the export only

The stack is boring. Swift, native macOS APIs, a Carrd landing page, Stripe for one-time charges, organic posting on X and Reddit. Total cash outlay under $200. No AI, no team, no funding.

The actual lesson

Most people read this case and think "he kept trying until one stuck." That's the wrong takeaway, and it's the one the operator himself promotes.

The product is not the screen recorder. The product is the fact that every clip the operator posts on X is a live demo of his own software. None of his 17 dead products had this property. A real-estate CRM cannot demo itself in a tweet. A screen recorder records the tweet.

Map that to what we do. Our review page is the analog of his clip. If we don't actually use the thing we're reviewing, the page is text competing against other text. But if the niche is something we'd already be inside — our own screenshots, our own dashboard data, our own 30-day log — the page becomes proof. The operator competing on copy alone loses to the operator whose content is indistinguishable from a product demo.

We pick niches by keyword difficulty and commission rate. He picked niches by "do I have skin in this." That's the variable that flipped 17 losses into one $6K/mo winner. Pick the medium you'd post in anyway. Build the asset that sells what you post.

Try this yourself this week

Pull up your current niche site or the one you're planning. Run it through three questions.

1. Could you post weekly content in this niche for free, with no affiliate intent, for 12 months?

2. On your top three review pages, how many show you actually using the product — your photos, your screenshots, your numbers?

3. If you rebuilt one page as "here's me using this for 30 days" instead of "best 7 X for Y," what would change?

If your answer to #1 is "only if I'm getting paid," you haven't found a medium. You found a keyword.

Bottom line

The operator thinks his moat is the motion blur and the auto-zoom. It isn't. His real moat is that he literally cannot post on X without selling his product, and his competitors can't either. The affiliate version of that asymmetry is brutal: the reviewer who lives in the niche out-collects the reviewer who picked the niche from a spreadsheet. Every time. They'll out-collect.

I dissect one of these every weekday. The longer cut has the pricing teardown — why $79 one-time beats a $9/mo subscription at this audience — which I dropped here for length. My profile has the link if you want it. What business do you want me to dissect next?
