Broke down a $113K MRR open-source SaaS that smashed a $3K plateau without changing one line of code

Broke down an open-source SaaS this week — operator went from $3K MRR to $113K MRR in 12 months without changing the codebase. Sharing the dissection because the real lesson is not what the operator thinks it is.

What he built

The operator is Nevo David, ex full-stack engineer who deliberately took a growth marketing job to learn distribution before shipping his own thing. Then he launched Postiz, an open-source social media scheduler for 30+ platforms with a paid cloud tier stacked on top.

The numbers:

  • Sep 2024 launch
  • Stuck at $3-6K MRR for several months
  • Mar 2026: $61K MRR, top 0.9% of Stripe-verified indie SaaS
  • Jun 2026: $113K MRR / $1.3M ARR
  • $0 paid ads across the entire run

The stack is boring on purpose: GitHub, Next.js, Stripe, Discord, a few n8n integrations. Nothing here you couldn't stand up in a weekend on a $50/month infra budget.

The training-grade lesson

Most people read this case and conclude "open source is the cheat code." That is the wrong takeaway.

The product didn't change. The noun did.

At $3K MRR, Postiz was "an open-source social media scheduler." At $113K MRR, it's "run your social on autopilot with AI agents." Same code. Different buyer in the buyer's head. The first one competes with Buffer and 40 free clones. The second one competes with hiring a social media manager. Price tolerance jumps roughly 6x.

Map this onto a niche site. Your budget camera review site isn't "another camera review site" — that puts you in an EMD knife fight with 200 competitors for the same SERP. Same content, different framing ("the only site that buys every camera retail and stress-tests it for wildlife shooters") competes in a different category, attracts a different reader, ranks for different intent. The keyword set changes. The RPM changes. The backlinks you attract change.

Most of us hit a traffic plateau and write 30 more articles. The plateau isn't a content problem. It's a noun problem.

Try this yourself this week

Pick one underperforming review page or pillar post. Don't touch the body. Ask:

  1. What category does my reader currently think this page belongs to?
  2. What adjacent, higher-intent category could the same content live in?
  3. If I changed only the H1, meta title, and first 80 words, which category would it claim?

Rewrite the top of the page for the second category. Leave the body intact. Wait 14 days, then check rankings and CTR.

If your answer to #1 is "a review," you haven't found your noun yet. "A review" is a commodity shelf. "A teardown by someone who has owned every model in the lineup" is a different shelf entirely. Same content. Different reader. Different price tolerance.

Bottom line

The operator thinks open source is his moat. It isn't. His real moat is that he quietly holds OAuth tokens to 30+ platforms that AI agents can't legally acquire themselves — he is becoming infrastructure. He doesn't know that yet.

Our parallel: own what the platforms can't replicate. Email list. First-party data. Reader trust. Traffic comes and goes. The list compounds.

I dissect one of these every weekday — same teardown format, different vertical. The full Postiz dissection has a section on the six-channel distribution stack he ran weekly for two years (cut for length here, and it's the part most affiliates can lift directly). Check my profile if you want the longer version.

What kind of business do you want me to dissect next?
