Adopt, Assimilate, or Something Else

In the grand saga of human vs. machine, we find ourselves clinging to our thrones as the ultimate arbitrators of AI. Picture us, the noble guardians of technology, using WA’s cutting-edge algorithms like a finely tuned orchestra, meticulously crafting AI prompts with the precision of a watchmaker. We’re the maestros of this digital symphony, blending ‘eureka!’ moments with the cold, hard logic of science and computer engineering. It’s a delicate dance, balancing creative genius with algorithmic accuracy to extract the perfect results from our AI minions.

Robots!

But wait, there’s a plot twist in our sci-fi epic! As we merrily program away, envisioning a future where machines learn and grow, we might just be scripting our own obsolescence. Imagine, a world where AGI (Artificial General Intelligence, for the uninitiated) isn’t just a cool feature in the latest spy movie, but a real player in military operations. That’s when we’ll have our ‘welcome to the food chain’ moment, taking our humble seat right behind the silicon-brained overlords we created. So, while we pat ourselves on the back for our brilliant engineering, let’s not forget that we might just be programming the VIP guest list for our own retirement party as the reigning species. Irony, thy name is AI!

Interesting post, Duncan. I have a couple of comments.

First, people have always moved up the ladder of improving themselves, and there has always been doom and gloom predicted. Luddites destroyed power looms in the late 18th and early 19th century. Henry Ford destroyed the buggy industry. Automation took a lot of jobs away from people but created a lot of new ones.

Second, no one really knows what AGI means. 70 years ago a computer scientist named Alan Turing came up with what is called the Turing Test. In a nutshell, it says that if you are communicating with a computer and a person and can't tell which is which, the computer is intelligent.

Finally, once computers achieve AGI, we will always have the off switch (remember Data from Star Trek?).
