The importance of page ranking - practical example

The other day I was showing my wife what I've been doing here at WA, my new site, etc. I was explaining how our goal is to get our content high on the search results so people can find us. I said that page 1 of Google is ideal. Pages 2 and 3 or ok, but not many people will go to the next pages.

She didn't know what I was talking about. Now, my wife is a smart cookie. She's an accountant with the state and really good with managing large accounting projects, reports, large amounts of data data, and she's an expert at Excel.

However she's not so much on top of internet stuff. She had no idea that there were search results beyond page 1 of Google. And even on page one she rarely scrolls down "past the fold". She just doesn't search for things so much to catch things like that so she's not aware of it all that much. In fact she doesn't even intend to use Google to search. On our Mac she just types what she's looking for into browser's address bar and she gets the results.

Granted this is just a single example, but I'd dare to say is probably more typical then we might think. Just a reminder of the value of climbing to the top of the search ranks.

Thanks for your post. I am the same, I hardly scroll down past the fold. People are busy and usually after quick information. There is not much time to check page 2, 3 and so on...

It's more important than many realize! :)
