Hi dstegall, I have been in the same boat you find yourself in. You pose many questions and I'll get to them. As far Inspirational blogs, I've had three. But because I self taught and didn't know how to Properly build website or how to monetize them. I needed a step by step program to guide me along. So I chucked it all and finally found WA.
I was going to start a Niche site, but in just a few lessons I learned what I thought was outdated and I wasn't ready for a niche site. I was doing it all wrong. I decided to go the Affiliate Program to build my 1st site and learn what I needed to and still be earning an income from those efforts. Then start my niche site later.
Now I am working through the lessons and finding how little I knew. You may want to consider this path too. Everything you learn will come into play as your business grows.
