Clearing the mind to find that niche!

Will taking a break help me find my niche?

Well, I am only here a few days, and I think the WA community, and my mentor, know that I am struggling to identify my niche. My soulmate thinks I am losing my mind and I am starting to agree! I’ve been jotting down ideas on my iphone notes when they come to me and reading some of the more experienced WA community member blogs on best ways to identify the correct niche (some excellent blogs out there, so newbies, please get reading before deciding).

Approaches differ in that some of the WA community feel you need to be an expert in your field, some are following their dreams and desires, whilst others are making a focused beeline for the money. At the end of the day, we are all here to create an abundant lifestyle and live the life we crave so deeply, so any approach seems to work, provided the niche does equate to income. Otherwise, what is the point?

Whilst working on the day job this morning I started to feel really lethargic and foggy. I think both my laptops felt the same way because they kept crashing and dropping internet access. I was getting nowhere fast! So I decided on a much-needed 20 minute break and to listen to a paraliminal. These blogs are non-promotional, but I had a source for one about creating abundance in my email inbox. I’ve listened to them a few times before, and if nothing else, I feel clearer and refreshed after doing so. I thought if I could just relax and get deep into my sub-conscious mind, I might actually start to identify my niche; the one that would make my heart sing with the realisation that ‘this one might work!’

Now truth be told, I have been working on going into the pet niche as our two dogs are our great passion. I’ve done the relevant searching and researching; certainly the area is ‘hot’ and should be profitable. I just don’t feel expert enough to keep focusing on a website about this. However, I will hold this thought as I have some good branding ideas running through my mind. Oh my crazy, confused and terribly cluttered mind!

So I put the headphones into my ears, lay down, and drifted into my own wee place for a time.

……What makes my heart sing? What makes me ‘me’? What am I passionate about?Well, you know something? I am passionate about exactly what I was doing at that very moment. Trying to be a successful professional woman, a loving mum, a great partner, a caring daughter, a fun friend, and all whilst trying to stay looking good and feeling great. Here I am on my detox diet, multi-tasking like hell and somehow trying to stay on my two feet and ensuring the lipstick stays in place. I am ‘my niche’! I’d written it in my profile and I hadn’t even noticed. Me and all the other aged 40+ professional women………need to hone it down though…..

So, I’d really welcome your thoughts on my current ideas for my niche which I have narrowed down to three:

1. Bringing up a puppy (ours is just turning 3 months) based on our own experiences as dog owners.

2. Kid’s parties (hadn’t mentioned that one yet but my mentor likes this one, and let’s face it, Princess Kate’s family have done very well in this profitable area).

3. How to be a successful, professional woman. Habits/ lifestyle/looking good and feeling great when all around you is going nuts.....you know the swan thing? Paddling away like mad under the water.

I really need you to help me hone down number 3 though.

In addition, I've decided to stay completely away from the day job in terms of my niche; it's too difficult in terms of ethics, regulation, professional standards etc. Plus, I really need to do something different. This needs to be about my passion outside of my work.

Your thoughts, opinions and advice would be so much appreciated WA community. Let’s get me over this hurdle and I'll get cracking on my website. The theme of my blogs needs to change!

Now, I’m away to whiz up another protein shake!

Hi Ruth,
The pace and tone of your post tells me you have a large portion on a medium sized plate. You obviously have a lot of talent but it seems to me you are really spreading yourself thin and need to sideline some items. STOP and relax a bit and think focus.
I agree with Alex on item three. That seems like a very large niche though. You might turn it over to your subconscious. Jot some questions down on a 3x5 card just before you retire and let your mind work on it while you sleep. It keeps him out of trouble 'cause the little bugger never sleeps anyway. Make him earn his keep.
My best,
Dick

Hi Dick
I love your reply and suggestion. Thank you. You have me sussed! Number 3 is the one I think I really want to develop, but I absolutely agree. It's needs more focus and specificity. I shall STOP....for now.
Kind regards
Ruth

Hi Ruth,
What's a "sussed"?
Some wise guy once wrote that is important to follow our instincts. They are "right on" nearly 100% of the time. I think that's another way of saying follow your heart.

Hi Dick
'Sussed' - It means you have me figured out - must be an Irish term! Absolutely agree - instinct and gut feelings are so important.
Thanks for the great advice here. Take care
Ruth

Well said, Ruth. I used to get a kick out of looking at my biorhythms back in the 80's, and I was surprised at how accurate they were. I think our perfect niche can vary from week to week, so if one can just tune in, as you suggested, and created a website when that niche is at it's peak, it will work. I've done many things in my life, but I can say I'm an expert at much of anything, so if that's what is required to have a successful website, I'm sunk....but I don't believe that is the case.
Keep up the good work! You're an inspiration.
Dennis

Thanks Dennis. I think I have got 'hung up' on being an expert! I'm like that at work. I am expert at what I do there and everyone comes to me for help and advice, so that's what I'm used to. Think I need to continue to chill out about this, leave the perfectionist at work, and it will start to fall into place. Thanks for taking time to read my comment and blog. Best regards
Ruth

I think Alexander gives some good direction, there are many woman who are looking for a change of direction especially when the children finally leave home, I remember that one was a wife and a mother for such a long time kind of lost sight of who I was and what I would like out of life, as it had always been about my family first, was quite strange concept that I could really just do what I want

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment Katie. It's all helping me.
Ruth

I hope you find your niche soon

Hi Dr Ruth, number 3 would be the one that would stand out. That 40+ time can be a lonely place for professional women. So much juggling to be done and you are sort of at that halfway point of your career. So I think many would identify, which would provide a very large resivor for content.
When it comes to niches the best ones to go for are the ones that are based around our own experiences and life.
Alexander

Thanks for this Alexander. It really helps to get fresh perspective and thinking on this.
Kind regards
Ruth

Head phones music ?????

Ah Ha Paul!!...did you just add number 4? You have great attention to detail!!

Well just throwing a couple of things at you but what is your hobbie because that is what mine is check my site and tell me what you think
http://Perkune.com. Ok
Best regards. Paul

Hi Paul. Now that makes sense to me; it's your niche! Thank you for sharing the idea with me; I do appreciate you taking time to read my ramblings. I love your site. I must show it to the 'other half' as he would be very interested. Although we differ vastly on our love of music. He loves techno/dance and the louder, the better. I took him to see his favourite DJ for his Birthday present recently and was nearly sick with the bass drumming through my feet! What an experience that was! My headphones are by a certain brand beginning with B and ending in E. Can I say brands here? I love them. Lost a set and went straight out to replace them but they certainly aren't cheap.
Kind regards
Ruth
