Word Press Woes

After a month of struggling with Word Press, I put my original site on the back burner (not giving up on it altogether), and tried a different hosting program so I could use a more traditional page builder. Lo and behold, a mere 4 hours later, I had a new website up and running. It's by no means complete yet, but I have all the keywords saved (thanks to the handy, dandy little keyword tool here at WA - love that feature), all my main pages are up and functional, and there's even an Amazon Widget. Will work on some of the back pages & links tomorrow.

If anyone knows of a good "drag and drop" Word Press page editor that doesn't cost an arm & a leg & that will edit the home page as well as all the other pages, please let me know. Otherwise, I think my brain just wasn't built for WP... I can't seem to get my head wrapped around it, despite checking out some WAbinars, getting help from other members & "trying" for over a month.

Doesn't mean I'll leave WA, though. There are many many other things I like about this place - the community being the biggest factor.

I'm sorry that you have had such a challenging time getting a site up and running. As Christian (@Sielke) says, you don't want to be creating your own theme. You may not have got quite the right help so far but do get someone to help you. You can always pm someone like myself or Sielke to get you on the right track and help you develop the site you want.

Best wishes

Beverley

Thank you for the encouragement, Beverley. I think at this point I need a little more "hands on" assistance. But it will happen. Maybe not as soon as I want, but it will.

Seems like you wanted to make your own theme, maybe something like this: http://headwaythemes.com/ would help you. Creating your own theme isn't something I recommend to a beginner. Creating static web pages isn't something I'd recommend either. Let me know if I can help you to achieve what you want to achieve. The key is taking baby steps, get a site up then slowly learn how to make it bend to your will.

I was looking at headway themes a couple of days ago, but can't afford it right now. It does look like it does what I want to, though.
I've built websites using regular ol HTML and web page builders for many years. While I really am just starting out with affiliate marketing, I'm far from a beginner to web page building. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I do have some idea what I'm doing. Except with Word Press... it seems to be like learning to speak horse to me - I'm just not getting it. I have all this empty space on the main page that I cannot seem to get rid of no matter what I do (and I've tried pretty much everything). I post articles through blog & they don't save properly. I tried to put up a photo in the header & when it actually saves right (which is seldom), it comes out all wrong. Half the widgets are in the wrong place or don't work properly. It took me forever to figure out just how to get keywords to save (but I think I finally got that figured out... after several days of working with the plug ins). I'm still trying to figure out how to get social media buttons on the page.... It's pretty awful & severely frustrating for me.
Once I ditched Word Press & went back to a regular web page builder like I'm used to working with, it took me very little time. I hit a small speed bump or two, and I'm not finished yet... but I feel like I have something I can actually work with in a reasonable amount of time.
Doesn't mean I'm giving up on anything. If I can get some hands-on help with Word Press & get my family to calm down about not seeing any results, or seeing me frustrated literally to tears (the word insanity was on my husbands lips earlier today), then I'll be golden.

Ah gotcha, making Wordpress bend to your will is a little different then just regular HTML. Do what works for you now of course but keep at it, Wordpress is a really high in demand skill to have and it makes life a whole lot easier when it comes to managing your own sites.

Thank you for the reply, though - I truly appreciate it. :)
I know someone here in town who is literally an expert at Word Press. It'll be a bit before she can get me in her schedule, but it'll happen. I'm nothing if not determined.
