Information Overload. The Foe of the Internet Marketer, (if you let it become one).

As we are all aware the world we live in has got so much information available. In particular the last 20 or so years the amount of data available to any given individual has exploded in the last two or so decades. And now more recently, with the advancement of mobile technology we have virtually an endless amount of information right at our fingertips 24/7, 365 days a year. This has not occurred in human history before, not even close. I actually feel very fortunate to be born in an era where it is possible to start a business digitally and potentially make a very good living provided I'm consistent with my efforts and put the work in.

However, there is another side to this information goldmine which I would like to shed some light on. I mean it's pretty obvious but I'm going to say it anyway. And that is information overload. I remember back in 2009 I actually was going to start up with WA already then. The trouble was I had all these other training programs on the go (Clickbank and Chronic Commissions are the two that spring to mind, but there were many more). Like many people, I made the mistake of getting into too many programs at once and also listening to too many reviews by this person and then by that person and in the end it just became one massive mess inside my brain and it just did my head in.

You end up getting pulled in so many directions that you just become dizzy with too much data and the human mind cannot process all that data properly. 6 months went by and I still had not made a choice of what program I wanted to do. And obviously with no money coming in, we all have to pay our bills at the end of the day so I decided to go back to the same old jobs. Jobs that don't lead anywhere, promise everything and deliver nothing other than your pay. However, that is now in the past. I've not only turned a new page but I've thrown that book in the bin and started a completely new one!

Now, focus is the keyword here.
And by that I mean not just focusing on what you want to do, that's established, at least in a broad sense. But focus on where you are right now. So here are some key points I'd like to get out there...........

  • When you're just starting like me strongly focus on the information that you really and absolutely need to get started. Only focus on that data and training associated with THAT phase, nothing else. If you don't there is a good probability you will become overwhelmed, muddled and frustrated. You want a clear mind to work with, not cloudiness of any sort. Methodicalness is critical in the early stages.
  • Not to sound harsh but avoid people who try bring you down or criticise your efforts. You will find that many of these people are not doing much with their own lives anyway.
  • Don't rush - this is not a race. As Kyle and Carson themselves have said, everybody works at a different pace. We all have different lives to live; so ensure you leave yourself with enough power in your step to get on with other things.
  • Take the time to switch off and relax. All sucessful people who have reached the top started out with a regime that took time out for themselves.
  • I've said it before, but lay the foundations properly. Take the time to learn the basics of website building, adding graphics, getting the navigation sorted etc, which is what I'm doing now.
  • Spend the time to put in quality research and write good quality captivating articles. Write from the heart as well, people will notice that you mean what you say.
  • Be under no illusion that this is going to be easy. If it was, everybody would be doing it. I know, I've put in many, many hours for my fist biz and that has succeeded, (partially). Keep learning and improve, I've also learned a lot from that first venture. Never close off to new ideas. Once you find success, rinse and repeat.
  • Seek help when you need it, there is so much help at WA that it's amazing. The most successful people in the world developed strong business and personal relationships. Networking is power as is knowledge.
  • Take care of yourself - there's no point in setting up an online empire if you're not going to be around to enjoy the fruits of your labor or worse still stuck in a lousy bed.
  • Set clear goals in where you want to be not just in the long-term but also do sub-goals or short-term goals if you like, on where you want to be in say a month, three months, six months etc.
  • I like to keep written notes at the end of each day. It does not have to be a novel, just the basics of what I've achieved for that day. As well as digital back-up, that way if things go belly up or I lose my PC I've still got an idea of what I've done. Back up using memory sticks as well.
  • Adopt the business mindset - by that I mean start getting away from the 9-to-5 grind state of mind. See failure as a learning process, rather than saying to yourself, oh that was a waste of time. There are things you would have learnt from that experience, take those in a positive light and re-apply them to your new situation.
  • Like my late old man used to say "Don't compare yourself to others" and I agree, as usually its counterproductive. Rather, spend your time and energy focusing on you and how you can make your life better. Not just yourself but those important to you. To get to the top not only takes dedication and time but also a certain degree of selflessness. Unless you are completely alone in the world (I sincerely hope that you're not) its not just about you.
  • To summarize and the biggest point of all - cut out any unnecessary information or facts that are not pertinent to you right at this moment. That will clear the path (and thus your mind) and make it much easier to focus and move ahead, slowly....but surely. Chip away each day!

Have a great week and more to come soon...next post will be on the pros and cons of being a Vendor (the path I previously took and are still taking to a degree) or being an Affilaite Marketer (much more palitable).
