7 Helpful Questions For Choosing A Niche

When beginning with Wealthy Affiliate some of you already know at least a little bit about internet marketing, building a website, and what field or niche you want to go into. For the rest of you it isn't so clear cut. You may know of a general direction you want go but don't know how to narrow it down. Finally, some are just so confused or so new to the concept of being self employed that they have an empty bucket when it comes to ideas.

This post is to help the second two groups of people out. With 7 simple questions to help start the gears turning my aim is to help people realize they have tons of ideas already, they just don't realize it.

I encourage you to right down, whether on paper or word doc, at least 2-4 items for each question.

Question 1.

What is something you like to do?

This could be anything, a hobby you have, building, collecting, or competing. An activity you enjoy doing, intellectual, physical, combination of both? Anything and everything you do is in a niche.

Question 2.

What do you buy?

Unless you are a self-sufficient mountain man living in the wilderness, you buy services and products same as the rest of us. We are all consumers and that makes you a great source for niche ideas. Also its probably a good idea to choose something that you are familiar with and/or buy often.

What was the last thing you bought? Something you buy multiple times a week, weekly, monthly, every two, three, six months. Physical objects, services, information online, programs. For work, school or personal. You don't have to name something for everything I just mentioned, you only need one niche to get started.

Question 3.

Have you ever had a problem that you fixed yourself?

If you are a do it yourself person then you have already done some project, fix some problem, or helped out a friend. Whatever you did is niche worthy and can become huge source of income, especially since you have personal experience to give to the online community.

Question 4.

Do you have a friend or family member that is really good at something?

When finding a job there is a popular saying that goes something like this, "Its not what you know, its who you know." Do you have someone in your life that is really good at some skill, job or trick, that you wanted to learn but never had good reason to invest the time to do so? Now is your chance.

They represent a niche, and you can tap into their knowledge to get a jump start. You'll be learning something cool while building the foundation for a business at the same time

Narrowing Your Search

By now you have several ideas floating around in your mind, that is if you haven't settled on one already. These next three questions are aimed at helping you narrow your chosen field or interest into a specific niche.

Also I am on almost everyday so feel free to message me and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Question 5.

In your activity what items do you use?

This two part question bounces off the ideas of Questions 1 and 2. With any sport, hobby, pastime, or activity there will almost always be a need for material, parts, instructions, tips and tricks, or advice. With your field, what is an instrument, tool, gear, accessory, or starter kits that you could promote along with information centered around the use of said item.

You could also look on Google instant to get ideas. Type in your field and press space. this makes Google think you want to type something more and it gives you examples of what it thinks you want. This gives you at least half a dozen ideas right away. If it isn't narrow enough, do the same process over and over again until you have your niche

Of the things you buy, why did you buy it?

What did you buy that item for, what activity is it used for, what is its purpose? Three examples from my coffee table right now. The X-Box controller is part of a gaming niche, the bike lock is a cycling, or security niche, and the boxing tape belongs to boxing and fitness.

Question 6.

What supplies or resources did you need completing you project?

Amazon is the biggest user of affiliate marketing on the internet. They have one of the largest selections of items, goods, and resources, and chances are they have something you used in your project.

Browse their online shelves for a few minutes in the area of interest and find several items that you used or could have used that you know something about. Then determine which of those you would like to write, learn and teach others about.

Wait, There's more

To help narrow these ideas down even further, here are two bonus tips (yes I know their free, syaing bonus makes it sound cooler) that are invaluable.

First, to know if your niche is specific enough, use either Jaaxy.com, which has a 30 free searches membership if you're not already signed up, or the free keyword took here on Wealthy Affiliate to see what kind of keywords are out there. Keep in mind that you are not looking for specific keywords, at least not yet. You are going to look at the Competition column on the WA keyword tool and the QSR column on Jaaxy.

Observing all the numbers for all keywords, make sure you get as close to 300 as you can, the lower the better. If a majority have numbers higher than that then narrow your niche. Also the additional keywords and within Jaaxy.com the recommended keywords on the side can spark ideas for specific markets.

You could also look on Google instant to get ideas. Type in your field and press space. this makes Google think you want to type something more and it gives you examples of what it thinks you want. This gives you at least half a dozen ideas right away. If it isn't narrow enough, do the same process over and over again until you have your niche.

This was a TERRIFIC post and VERY Helpful! Even though I already have my niche, it made me think of more ways to look at my niche. Thanks again!

Good post! Solving problems that you know how to solve, or you can easily learn how to, and be able to deliver the solution, is a great way to go. Thank you for breaking down useful questions :)

Anything I can do. Found your niche yet?

I have two. One that I know well, where I have the temptation of going a bit general, and another one that it is of my interest but where I need some extra learning.

That is awesome. I hope you do well and if you apply what you learn here at WA you will succeed in no time.

You too, thanks :)
