Out of the blue, a repeat customer sends a text, inquiring into availability at my timeshare in Nuevo Nayarit. Ends up booking two weeks, netting me about 30% profit per week over my cost.

This may sound like passive income, but it's anything but that. First, they are repeat customers because they enjoyed the first experience. I responded to their inquiry quickly and concisely. I answered their questions accurately. And I was flexible in working with them, as they had to change some dates and re-book weeks to fix a boo-boo on their end. All with a smile.

Second, they enjoyed the vacation. There were no surprises, because I was able to provide them with a "What to Expect at the Resort" file, full of tips and suggestions for making their stay memorable and enjoyable.

And finally, they appreciate the pricing. We have negotiated every drop of blood in this contract so that we can offer a week at a lower cost than any of our competitors, while still making a decent profit. We offer a top-notch product that can't be matched at any other resort (and we've been to a LOT of them.) And I keep an eye on what others are charging for the same week, to make sure we stay competitive.

There's so much more to running a business than creating a website. There's incorporation and taxes, accounting, government forms and licenses. But even so, we've been able to supplement our retirement income pretty well without devoting every waking moment to making money. And the website really does help us keep in contact with customers.
