I remember moving to New York back in 2011, and not knowing anybody. I only had fifty dollars to my name. I did not have a place to live or a job lined up. I stayed with a few people who were introduced to me from the African community until I could find a job to support myself. One month later, I still couldn’t find work, and the people who took me in started asking me for rent that I couldn’t pay, so I was kicked out.
