Set daily goals

Everyone knows it's important to set goals. When we first joined the WA community, one of the first things we were asked to do was to post our money goals and to set some non-financial goals for ourselves. For me, these goals are good long-term aspirations with flexible time frames. But in order to achieve them, I need to be taking action towards them every day.

Each day, I write down 3-5 things to do for my career and 3-5 things to do in my personal life. This helps me balance my personal life and my work, and it keeps it simple for me. I've found that too many items on my to-do list will actually make me less productive and less organized. So I keep it to 3 things I definitely know I will have time for and 2 more if I still have time to do them that day.

For example, today my 3 career goals were to finally decide on a domain name and purchase it, put more content on my site and to figure out how to put a separate menu on the top and left side of my page. My personal goals are to take my son to the library, then take him to his tutor, and to wash and straight-iron my hair. While he is at his tutor, I will make 2 phone calls (2 of my extra things to do if I have time, which I will). And when I get home, I will clean up the house a little while my son plays with his friends before dinner (another one of my "if I have time" items).

Now let's say that when I get home, my son's friends can't come out to play and he wants to spend some time with me. In that case, the cleaning could wait until tomorrow, becoming one of tomorrow's top 3 things to do.

And that's what works for me! I am a single mother of 2 boys with ADHD and have managed to earn 2 degrees and 3 professional licenses AFTER they were born, while working full-time in one way or another, including running my own face painting business and still have time for myself, family, and friends. I even went through a 4 year custody battle amid all that. So if I could manage all that, anyone can manage their way to any goal. Just be consistent with keeping it simple. Don't try to overload your schedule because I've done that too, only to burn out. Slow but steady is the way to go.
