How Do You Handle An Insult?

You heard someone remarked about you. Then you said, "I'm insulted by that comment." We've all felt the sting of an insult. It hurts. it cuts.. And it's even worst when it comes from another family member.

The place where life ought to be the safest is often the riskiest - the home. We cut loose at home more than we do elsewhere. All it takes is a bit of sarcasm to unleash a counterattack and soon it's a matter of who can top who. Why is the home so vulnerable to attack?

First, in the family, you know each other so well that you know where to jab. Children as well as spouses, look for targets either to get a reaction or to retaliate. Even when we know there will be retaliation we still do it.

Another reason we attack each other is that we know we can get away with it. You can't resign from your family or fire your family members. You're stuck with each other.

Sometimes a family member will insult someone and then cover up with, "I was just kidding."

A third reason a home is so vulnerable is that we live in a society in which humor is built around insults and sarcasm.

What do you and your family watch on television? Sitcoms abound with insults, put-downs, and sarcasm. It's easy to imitate what we see especially if we get a steady diet with it. But why would you allow yourself to conform to such inappropriate behavior?

There's a better way to relate as a family just by being one with each other, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds.

Don't repay evil for evil. Don't snap back at those who say unkind things about you. It would not help the situation in any way. Just make a habit to be kind to others and you will be blessed for it, for sure.

REMEMBER: NO ONE CAN INSULT YOU WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION. SO FORGIVE THEM AND MOST OF ALL FORGIVE YOURSELF FOR ALLOWING THEM TO HURT YOU!

What about you? How do you handle insults in your own way?

There is a saying about: NEVER INSULT AN ALLIGATOR UNTIL YOU'VE CROSSED THE RIVER!

MOVE ON

There are more people that like my stuff than dislike it so I don't really care.

Dave

YESSS!!!
That's the way it should be and
let them wallow in their own sorrow.

Thank you so much, Dave.

Have a blessed Sunday.

Elizabeth

Great post, Elizabeth.

The way with how I handle it is I just laugh it off or at the person that insulted me, until I walk away.

You know what they say, laughter really is the best medicine. 😉 Or I just pay them no mind.

Myra

Good for you, Myra and
it doesn't make any sense
wasting your time on people
like them.

Thank you so much, my dear
Myra.

Have a blessed Sunday!

There's a quote by Mark Twain that's worked for me, Elizabeth - "Never argue with a fool. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

I've realized they're only saying stupid things to trigger me, so I quit responding to them and go on my merry way. Silence is golden.

Isaiah 😊

Good for you, Isaiah.

Yes, indeed, and Mark Twain's quotes
are always deep and sometimes I
didn't want to write them here as
there are so many eyes but do not
see, ears but do not hear and hands
but do not use them.

At any rate, calmness is mastery.

Thank you so much, Isaiah.

Have a peaceful night.

I remember something I saw. When someone insults you, just say you are right. I am …whatever. It defuses the situation quickly. Lovely post.

Hello Stephen,

Yes, agree with that person
and just say, "you are right."

That's the end of it. :-)

Thank you, Stephen.

Blessings.

Elizabeth

Short, sharp and shiny.

Aww! I love that, Helen.

Beautifully said.

Blessings to you, my dear Helen.
