How Does Medium Identify AI Content?

So, for those of you who write on Medium, hopefully, you will be aware of their policy on AI content.

Surprisingly, they do allow AI-assisted stories, but they must be clearly identified as such.

However, it is not possible to earn money from their Partner Program using AI content, even if you identify it.

If found, your story will be removed from behind the paywall, and your account could be suspended.

However, what I found interesting, is that they do not use any kind of automated checker or platform to determine AI but rely on their human editors to spot it.

So, let's have a little experiment, shall we?

Pretend you are examining the following content, what are the obvious AI markers?

  • ** The Transformative Journey ** πŸš€
    • In this fast-paced world, let's kick things off by unveiling that affiliate marketing is like setting sail on the vast ocean of the digital age, navigating through the swirling currents of market trends and consumer behaviors. This transformative journey requires a captain’s keen eye to chart a course through the complex waters of online promotion.
    • It underpins a robust network between merchants, affiliates, and customers, crafting and unleashing tailored marketing strategies like a shipwright meticulously designs a vessel for the seas’ capricious whims. πŸ“Š
  • ** Engaging the Audience ** πŸ‘₯
    • Affiliates harness the intricacies of digital platforms, crafting and tailoring messages to resonate with specific audiences like dancers moving in rhythm to the music of consumer demand. 🎯
    • Incorporating data analytics unveils tailored solutions, delving into conversion rates like a skilled dancer who captivates the audience with every precise and calculated step. πŸ”
  • ** Key Elements of Success ** πŸ”‘
    • The affiliate network, a pivotal pillar, facilitates smooth transactions and connections like a harbor where ships dock and merge their journeys. πŸŒ‰
    • The use of AI in affiliate marketing has been hailed as transformative, unraveling consumer preferences like a choreographer unveiling a new dance that speaks to the soul of the market. 🧠
  • ** Navigating Challenges ** πŸ§—
    • Affiliates grapple with the ever-changing digital landscape, seeking unique and innovative engagement strategies like sailors wrestling with the sea's unpredictable nature, constantly adjusting their sails to catch the wind. πŸ”„
    • Establishing credibility and trust is significant, key to vibrant and successful affiliate partnerships, much like a dance partnership thrives on trust and mutual understanding, creating an enchanting performance. 🀝
  • ** Conclusion: The Affiliate Ecosystem ** 🌍
    • Affiliate marketing is a confluence of numerous dynamic elements, intricately woven into the digital marketing realm like a tapestry of interconnected sea routes. πŸ•Έ
    • It's all about navigating the complexities, tailoring strategies, and ultimately unveiling the potential of digital commerce in today's world, much like a captain charts a course to new lands or a dancer steps onto the stage, ready to dazzle the audience with their artistry. 🌟

How many did you find?

Asterisks, emojis, dancing or sailing metaphors, fast-paced, let's kick things off, unveiling, navigating, crafting, unraveling, tapestry, delving, etc.

Please only use AI as a guide, whether it's for Medium, your website, or WA posts, always add your own voice, experience and unique point of view.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Diane,

When I'm reviewing machine-translated material, I often change prepositions and add linking words. AI is also trained with translated material, and sometimes the basic structure of the other languages still shows in the translations.

I have to rewrite sentences with complex lists and phrases where more than two adjectives are used at a time. Adjective order is sometimes wrong and that makes sentences look funny.

Thanks, the post is inspiring, informative and a way forward for starters and, great ideas to take onboard for improvement and success in Wealthy Affiliate as an online business, great pillars as foundations for members as well, Valuable article to read as guideline too.

I learnt great ideas and will take in for my own good as well,

Interesting to hear that Medium still use actual humans to vet the content on the platform Diane, I still haven't gone there, but it is on my long to do list to do so at some point!

This doesn't strike me as AI content though.... with all of the emojis it seems similar to what I have seen you write after getting back from the pub after one too many!!

Some really good points were raised, Diane. AI is a great tool when used as a guideline and can cut hours off the time it takes to write a new blog. But, and it's a big but, it can only be used to suggest ideas. The final product must come from the heart and sound genuine. Another word I constantly find in AI content is "resonate"...it's a surefire giveaway that a machine has produced the content.

Hi Diane

Great post! πŸ‘

It's so important to add our "own voice, experience, and unique point of view" to everything we write on any platform! We seem to be losing a lot of that on WA. I see starter members with no prior experience in online marketing writing complex AI-generated blog posts about affiliate marketing topics that have a low authenticity and trust value.

Regarding Medium dot com, my guess is that it doesn't use automated AI checkers because none of them are reliable to the statistical certainty of an acceptable p-value. As you know, OpenAI sunsetted its AI checker because it couldn't meet this criteria for content that was created on its platform.

I put some of my scientific publications from medical and biomedical engineering journals published in the 1970s and 1980s through a variety of AI checkers. Parts of every one of them were flagged as high probability for AI-written content!

I've been using phrases like "Let's kick things off," flowery metaphors, and corny puns in my writing for as long as I can remember. My wife often claims I speak and write like a robot. Lol

In my opinion, as AI becomes more and more capable, human checkers will no longer have the ability to spot its content. Well, I guess we'll see what happens next. 😎

Rock On! 🀘
