To many Fires For Me In Oregon

My son and i have been going on short weekend travels or get away for a day or two trip. We headed over to see some of the water falls on hwy 138 in Oregon Our first plan of action was to go to Steamboat Falls at about mile marker 39 and see some others on the way down the mountains.(Yes, I know there r lots of waterfalls on Hwy 138 in Oregon we had then planned to go to Wildlife Safari, Seven Feathers Casino, for lunch and then follow up with The Oregon Vortex. We had left home at 3 am with what we thought was plenty of time.

We made it just fine to Hwy 138 got there about 5ish. The story changes as we approach Glide as there is a sign saying caution;traffic controller ahead. We made it up the road a few miles and I thought I had smelled smoke. Yep I did and we got guided up the road and through the forest fire they were calling, "The Glide Fire"

We made it up to Steamboat Falls and had planned some other visits to other falls but most were closed because of the fire. On the way down Hwy 138 we were once again guided through the fire with burning on both sides of the road, the length of which was just over a mile long in both directions.

We made it back to I-5 and headed south to go to Wildlife Safari as, we hadnt been there in about 10 years. We had a nice visit there seen all the animals. I had wanted to buy myself a hoodie from there but had no luck. Several were like $40 or more and paper thin, so on to the next adventure.

We traveled south on I-5 and arrived at Seven Feathers Casino and had lunch. Previously had thought luch was $7.99 but that price is only Monday through Thursday so we had brunch, (same thing different day) for $8.99. The food was great and the servers were right on top of things and very pleasant. Though wow can get my hoodie here. Big disappointment, most were in the $40 to $50 range but had one very appealing and that i liked a lot, it was $19 but it was also size 3xxx. i can wear a xl with lots of room and a L fits some what snuggly but a 3xxx. I told my son that him and I could have both worn it.

Next stop was to be The Oregon Vortex but it took a long time to get there. In route traffic crawled to top speed of 5 miles an hour and actual stopping a lot. After about 35 minutes in to that venture we discovered why, a newer nicer motorhome, one of those big coaches with you know 4 or 5 tip outs was on fire. (Prayers going out to and for the family, may God hold and guide and bless them, they have been through a lot) Wild fire fighters, several fire companies and the Oregon State Police had there presence there.

We finally were heading to The Oregon Vortex and further south we went the worse it got with both heat and smoke. The smoke was so intense that we could hardly breath and one stretch of road it was like the twilight zone we could hardly see. There was a fire in the Canyonville area but we did make it to the Vortex and headed home. The Vortex if you have never been there is amazing and a lot of fun for families aand children of all ages.

I do not like fire and I seen enough today to last a good long time, I also have seen more fires already in lifetime to last a long time All of them have been in Oregon. As a small child i was in two house fires, and a school fire, as a young teen and adult i was in 3 different houses that had chimney flume fires, catching the roofs on fire, (complete with fire department on that one) and a near miss propane explosion. The second house fire i was in, my bed was burning with flames all around me, (no i was not and did not smoke nor was I playing with matches, my blankets were to close to a baseboard heater). The near miss propane explosion melted my clothes to me and burned off my eye brows and eye lashes. From all of these fires one would think I was simply careless and not paying attention, however only one was one them was caused by my carelessness, all of the others were fires that I just happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. All in all we had a good day but not one I care to repeat any time soon

On the lighter side of life I think i must be one of only a hand full of people that ever got to play in the fire fighting foam. Our local fire company in Reedsport Oregon filled up an old three story house with the foam and let the neighbor kids play in it. We had a blast but not so much our mothers. Smiles on my face from laughing from remembering my mother's reaction.

Hello Diana,
I live in Oregon as well and every year it gets worse with the fires, sometimes you cannot even see the mountains from where I live in Central Oregon for the whole summer because of the smoke.
One year we had so many brush fires surrounding our town the smoke was like a fog that made it difficult to see across the road a lot of times.
I too am tired of it but it is the nature of the beast of where we live, lightening, carelessness when camping and outright vandalism is the cause for most.
I am in the Philippines right now and will be headed back in a few days.
How many fires are burning in Oregon now?
Seems like any given day during summer there is always 5 or 6.
