What is the BEST way to deal with New User Registration Spam?

Hello WA peeps!

I haven't been on WA for that long, but I've been getting a bunch of "New User Registration" spam sent by bots that are used to search the internet for domain email websites. I did a search regarding this topic, and didn't really get a definitive answer although I still need to go through all of the training. I currently use Mailer lite as an email service because of the functionality that I get for free.

The problem is that I don't use the plugin version, only the code given to me to use on the "header" section of my site. This allows entries into the opt-in form to go straight to the Mailer lite dashboard on their site page. This option does not allow me to control the email traffic directly in wordpress or prevent spam.

Some of the email accounts created have been pretty clever. They end in "@colon.cleanse.net" or other variations that include domains from my niche or social media contacts. They're pretty easy to spot, but it is still frustrating and time consuming to go through these and delete manually.

I've seen that there are several plugins for controlling spam, including services that charge a premium price to protect the entire website. The problem is that I already have five plugins (without an email plugin) and want to keep that down as much as possible. I've seen that some email services have spam prevention features. I just wanted to get an idea of which one is worth getting as an email list builder AND spam blocker.

I turned on the "Bad Bot Blocker" on the All-In-One SEO and that doesn't seem to be enough. I just got another Spam "New Registration User" today despite that feature being turned on. I guess there's no real effective way to block it without a plugin, so I might as well try to get two in one if possible.

What do you suggest as the BEST way to deal with this problem?

Go to the settings in WordPress under the general tab, turn off the checkbox that says anyone can register

I think my only concern with that method was if it restricts my ability to get new subscribers via opt-in form or comment form? Or are those forms separate from this function?

Those are separate entities from sign-ups to your website.

Ok awesome. Thanks for the help!

I don't know if this will help you, but I added a plugin called Stop Spammers on my travel agency site because I was getting a lot of obviously robot and spam comments. So far, it has worked well.

Awesome, I'll check it out! Thanks!
