Like Pulling Teeth - Analysis Paralysis

Creating my last article was like pulling teeth! It took me over a week to complete. Articles are usually very easy for me. The problem?

Analysis paralysis!

Anyone out there know what I mean?

It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Not only was I plagued by analysis paralysis, but I was trying to include too much in one article. Sound familiar?

I should remember, just like story writing, you need to outline your article and decide what you want to include and what can be made into another one later. I know, I hear the groans, but trust me on this one, I tried my last article without an outline and it was like pulling teeth!

Lesson learned.

Excellent advice. Thanks for sharing Desiree.

You're welcome!

So true!

I know exactly what you mean. You start what you think is going to be a simple post and then you find yourself having to research deeper and deeper to make sure that your facts are straight. What you thought was going to take a day or two takes a lot longer. It's happened to me as well.

I have that problem when writing reviews. An outline sounds like an excellent idea.

I've pants writing articles, book reviews, fiction etc...sometimes it works for me but I've noticed if I take the time to outline (most of the time) it helps me. Keeps my gray matter on track. :)

Hi Desiree, happens all the time to me.

Some people need outlines. I myself have to write from an idea and let it flow.

It's funny, because lots of published authors are the same way. Some create outlines. Some write by the seat of their pants and where the story takes them.

Sounds like you're an outline person. I hope your next post is smoother!

I've written 2 novels. The first I wrote by the seat of my pants. It took me 3 years. The second I outlined only took me a few months. I like to just free wheel it but sometimes it just doesn't work. :) Thanks!

Been there Done that too. Last week was trying to come up with something for a Review(I had been putting it off far too long) when I ran across this blog on Article styles.
Maybe these will help in the future. Sonny

Thank you. I'll check it out!

Excellent tip! I suffer from the same issue and so want to cram so much into 1 article. I will also attempt to be more disciplined to create an outline before I start, because it definitely does help the flow.
Thank you

Yes it does, my first novel I was a panster! It took me 3 years to complete it! The second novel I outlined in a day and finished in 6 months! The 3rd is almost done and the fourth is in planning. But articles are the same. Plan them out and know what you want to write. It helps!

And if you also write fiction, stay away from thesaurus.com until you're ready to edit! It's a great place, but can also give you analysis paralysis!
