A Day Of Confusion

I was all excited because my new laptop finally came in, now I am not so excited. I have been all day trying to get it up and running, now I have to figure out how to work it.

My biggest problem I am finding is my old computer was running Windows 7. Yes, it is several years old and runs so slow with everything I am trying to do now. Hense the need for new.

Now I am finding myself in a learning curve and the applications, especially my email does not work as I think it should (I know it is just me). I will conquer this but frustrated as it has slowed me down today.

I downloaded Office 365 and it took an hour or longer, of course, it is a free version through my work so maybe that is why and now I have to log into it to use it, working on a solution for that.

Ok so tomorrow is another day and hopefully I will get used to the new laptop, until then.

Hi Dena... wonderful sharing...
hope things are speeding up...

Thanks for the reply things are getting better that first day was torture.

Dena, I thought the new computers did it all for you?

I wish! It will get better I am sure.

It's no good trying to rush these things. I know how frustrating having to relearn the operating system can be. Patience is the keyword. I wish you every success

I will get there especially with everyone supporting me. I love this community.

I have never come across a community like this one!

Hi Dena....I was recently forced to retire due to serious medical issues with the nerves in my legs. I was a Technology Instructor for a Huge School Board. I'm assuming you're now using Windows 10? It's pretty much the same as Win7; things are just located in different spots & they've made the look much different, but try not to be intimidated too much.

The sign-in for the Office Suite is normally a 1-time process. Open outlook & add your email accounts there. That's where you can add/remove email accts under the mail section. The computer will store your name in memory so it'll remember you as long as you sign-in to the same Windows Acct. The help section in Outlook has a lot of great process explanations too.

Don't forget to restart your computer for the updates to take effect. Don't can too frustrated. You'll get through it. Go to Microsoft's Support section in their website & download some free tutorials &/or quick guides.
You'll likely have to sign-in to Google Chrome as well with a Gmail Acct if you're using Chrome.

I hope this helps you out. Feel free to ask me anything & I'll try to answer questions in the best "User-Friendly" way that I can.

@LanceLee

Thanks for the advise, I am planning on doing outlook as I know that will me my email needs. I think the biggest frustration is the BSIT degree I carry, of course I have been out of the field for 10 years, I should know these things. That also is what gets me in trouble and I tend to skip steps thinking I know what to do.

Take a deep breath Dena. Clear your head and get back to it with a fresh mind and work through the set up, one step at a time. It will come right. I relate to that with many new things, I am always in a rush to get it done but I end up shooting myself in the foot. I am getting better though):-. All the best with your new laptop
Lilian

You have explained me perfectly!

I am glad I could help.

Take your time with it Dena, do everything systematically and tick them off one by one!

You'll get there!

Wayne

You see there is the problem back to the list thing. I really need to master the list. LOL

Take a breather and then return to it, I got faith in you!

Wayne

Good luck with your new laptop. I hope you will be a pro soon so you can get back your speed.

Thanks! I will work to get there.

Hi, Dena. I can relate to your frustration. When Windows 10 first came out, I hated it. I couldn't find anything on my old laptop that ran on Windows 7. There is some kind of program that my computer tech put onto my laptop that made Windows 10 look more like Windows 7. I don't know what it is called, but it might be helpful for you. I could not find my documents, pictures, files, or anything, or even the list of programs on Windows 10.

I know I'm a stubborn old woman because I refused to type on that laptop keyboard. I kept losing what I had typed because of that square at the bottom of the keyboard that replaces a mouse. I HATED that thing!

I used a wireless mouse and keyboard and got along great with my laptop on my own terms. I am a good typist, and hated typing on the laptop keyboard because I kept getting my fingers in between the keys.

When my laptop got that "You Will Cry" virus, my computer guy told me it would cost more than the laptop was worth to fix it, so I purchased an old desktop that he had reconditioned that runs on Windows 7 from him. I know I'm an old dinosaur using another one, but at least I can find my files now!

I suppose I'll eventually have to upgrade to another laptop, but would prefer to wait until I can afford a Macbook Pro. They are very pricey, but they don't get viruses or run on Windows!

Good luck getting more comfortable with your new laptop, Dena.
There are several computer gurus on WA who might be able to help you get more adjusted to your new computer. Suggest you click on the white pen in the strip at the top of your profile page and ask for help from the community. Best wishes.

Thanks I am glad I am not alone, I have been refusing to let the other computer go for quite sometime.

You're welcome. That's the beauty of our community. There's always someone who can relate and give us support when we need it. Keep "Old Smoky" around as a "security blankie" if you need it! It won't hurt anything except collect a little dust!
Carol

Thanks that is the plan. I though it would be nice if I could run both at the same time so I don't have to flip back and forth between screens.

You are adventuresome, and brave to tackle a challenge like that! I never would have thought of doing that. I think I would get confused going back and forth between Windows 7 and 10, but you go girl! Good luck. Carol

I am just thinking when I am trying to do research, have it up on one computer and write on the other.

That sounds like a great idea! I print the info I want to use, then highlight the areas I need so I can find them as I type. Your idea sounds a lot less labor intensive...and wouldn't use as much printer ink, either! Carol

Yes it would help and save ink.

'growing pains' we all go through them...give it a day or two to adjust to the new laptop and new configurations - you will find that windows 10 if that is what you have, is very user friendly - once you befriend it!
And you will catch up on all time lost really fast...now that you have a faster new computer!
Enjoy!

Thanks for the encouragement! I don't normally have issues with change but could not even find the shutdown on it. Yes it is Windows 10 with a touch screen, that is another thing I did not realize how often I touch the screen. LOL
