Clyde & Co.

Clyde & Co. hired a percentage of our Sedgwick workers to continue on from the dissolving of Sedgwick. They hired my supervisor, but not my co-worker nor me. And the left-over Sedgwick workers are not to do any work for those that Clyde & Co. hired. This makes it very awkward, sitting across from our supervisor while she does all the work and we do nothing.

When a company dissolves in Missouri, it has to give its workers 60 days notice, and so my co-worker and I are guaranteed a paycheck until Jan. 19th. Plus our unused Paid Time Off (PTO). So we have three weeks to sit and do nothing.

Well, we didn't do nothing. We both were applying to other law firms to find a job. I had compiled a list of the top 50 Kansas City law firms and I emailed each of them yesterday, including an attachment of a cover letter and my resume.

It's not a good feeling to have our department divided like this. My supervisor says that she will try to hire us back if the workload becomes more than she can handle herself.

That's hope for the future. We just have to try to keep our attitudes in a good place for the next three weeks so she still thinks well of us.

I went on the law firms' websites to see if there were any vacancies, and I did see a receptionist job. It won't pay very much, but at least I'll have insurance. One of my medications that I got yesterday said on the receipt that my insurance saved me $1100. So my first goal is to either sign up for Cobra at $800 per month, or to get any job that has insurance. Then I can prove my worth and work my way up to Legal Word Processor again. I am expert level with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and transcription. Surely there is a vacancy somewhere that I can fill without going bankrupt. I put my student loans on deferrment, and then if I get something lower in pay I can do a pay-commensurate payment. I have a Master's Degree in Adult Education, summa cum laude, so I can learn any task I don't already know.

I'm staying positive and today's goal is to reach out to recruiters that I have worked with in the past. I'll even do secretarial work. That involves a lot of word processing tasks.

I'll keep up this journal until I find something. But it really is to my advantage to stay with Sedgwick until Jan. 19 to get my high salary until the very last day, and my PTO, which will be at least $3,500.

Many successes to you

Use the time to boost opportunities at WA as well Debra. Best of all worlds!

In case you do have to go to unemployment, remember they won't pay you for the first two weeks - they expect you to cover that yourself. So budget accordingly.
