Copyright Strikes On YouTube Chanel

So we all know that YouTube is one of the biggest platforms on the web and has been so for decades. With YouTube you can publish your videos and then embed them on your website. In fact, you don't even need to know HTML to do this, all you need to do is copy and paste the code into most WYSIWYG site/blog builders.

Live Streaming.

Live Streaming is very popular and this is where you can run into problems. One of the problems that you can encounter and one that I encountered yesterday was Strikes against you for Copyright infringement.

Copyright solving.

First off, always check your channel on a regular basis. This should be done so you can correct any violations as soon as you notice them. Google (who owns YouTube) are fair and if they see that you are correcting any accidental violation then no further action will be taken against you. But if you keep on breaking the terms of service and not correcting them, then it will be seen as a deliberate violation and YouTube will take your channel down which will mean losing viewers and subscribers which is what you need to monetize your channel. Also, it will damage you website or blog simply if a viewer of the site clicks on a video and sees that your video has been taken down for violations of their T's & C's then the site visitor won't return.

Deleting background music in live streams.

So, if you are live streaming a game on a gaming console and you want to stay complaint with YouTube terms of service then here is what you need to do.

  • Click on the game you wish to do a live broadcast
  • Then go to the settings
  • There you will see background music and radio music. Select these options and all background music will be cut from your broadcast and then you are good to go.

Broadcasting games.

Broadcasting games over the internet either on YouTube or Twitch is a gray area. Technically the game is covered by copyright but if you are doing a review or a "How to" tutorial then the game developer won't really mind after all it is free advertisement for the developer. But if your "How to" video is giving information out about cheating, Griefing (The term for Cyber Bullying in the gaming world) or hacking then the developer will definitely mind and they will take action as Take2Interactive the publisher and partner of Rockstar Games INC did already. No action was invoked and the YouTubers were just given a warning by the judge and were told to take down the video.

One of the test games was about a YouTuber doing a broadcast on what future updates were in the pipeline and if what he was broadcasting was true that would have meant that he had hacked into the files of Rockstar Games and this the publishers said might ruin the element of surprise for gamers. The other case was where a person was broadcasting glitches in the game where players could use to get extra cash.

Side note.

These glitches take time. They usually involve duplicating and selling high end cars in the game to get extra cash. And to be honest, playing the game the way it is meant to be played is quicker than cheating.

Live Broadcast on a computer.

In this section I won't be talking about gaming.

If you are going to do a live broadcast for something like a "How To" tutorial video. My advice to you is not to put on background music. But if you feel that background music is necessary, so for example if you are at an open air festival and you want to broadcast a review of this festival or if you are showing a video on how to operate a remote control drone. Then here is what you have to do.

  • Search on Google for you local copyright licensing agency
  • Aquire a digital music licence
  • I would then submit a support ticket to Google with your lice number in the message stating that you have permission to broadcast music on your channel.

Google will most likely check this information. But if everything is in order any strikes against you will be lifted and you are good to go.

Image copyright.

Also remember that images are subject to copyright. But there are both free and paid sites that you can avail of here are a list

There are thousands of sites that you can use. Other than Wikipedia the other 2 sites I mentioned have both a free and paid subscriptions that you can avail of.
