How I Research a Niche That Can be Profitable

I know that there is an audience out there for pretty much everything imaginable.

The problem is, there might be an audience for everything but it might also be the wrong audience you're targeting if you're planning to make money.

How Money Is Made From Blogging

Of course there are several ways to earn from a blog. You can make a specific niche related blog that targets a specific market. A review blog is an example.

You can create an entertainment style blog that isn't specific in its niche and build an audience by writing stuff people will love and come back to. Sell ad space or place ads on your blog.

The one thing I learned that a "guru" told me once was that if you plan to make cash from niche specific content, know your target market.

Ask Who, What, Why and Where

Here is a quick rundown on my usual research habits that has worked for me time and time again.

I tend to do the research rather quickly because if I am over analyzing it or being unsure of if it will work, I'll scrap the idea and move on.

The first thing I do is write down on paper what the niche is and then I ask who will likely be coming across my content in the SERPS.

Second question I ask myself is what is the main problem they are looking for solutions to?

Third thing I write down is why are they searching for the specific solution?

Then I ask myself, where would this demographic audience be? What kind of surfing habits they have, stuff like that. I don't dig into trying to find out every detail because I find that it kills unnecessary time where you could be finished this process a lot faster.

This first stage takes maybe an hour at most, but usually 30 to 45 minutes if you are just learning this stuff.

( I should mention that if you plan to create the content yourself, it's better to pick something you actually like talking about. For niches that I know make money but I hate writing about it because it would bore me to death, I outsource the work.)

Stage 2 Researching Your Niche

I like to check a few simple sources to see if the niche I chose will actually, potentially be

(Keep in mind that sometimes after creating a kick-ass content rich site, there's no guarantee it will be a winner. Sometimes no matter what you do, your site just won't resonate with anyone and you have to move on to your next project.)

One of the first things I do to figure out a potential cash maker site is I google it.

I will quickly know if it is possibly marketable if I see ads at the top of the first page in a broad keyword in my niche.

If no ads come up I will also look at the first few sites that appear and see what they look like. I look for approximate age of a site, check the comments area if it is available and look for ads if any above the fold.
(this is a quick glance type of thing that takes 5 minutes tops.)

The second source I go to is Magazine.com

Basically, if my chosen niche has a whole magazine publication in circulation it's a pretty good indicator that it's got an audience and that the niche is marketable.

If you think about it, why would a publisher create a magazine that they take the time to find advertisers willing to place ads in it, spend thousands of dollars on printing and making the content hiring writers if it wasn't marketable.

Then there is Amazon of course and also eBay Pulse

Niche related trends...

If it is a product that sells and people need it will show you how many sold units and reviews of it.

This process of researching is pretty much the method that I always go through every time and once you get good at knowing what to look for, it can be all done in under 20 minutes easily.

There are also, a whole lot of other ways to accomplish this and get the results you need. This particular method is one of many.

Hi Darren, this should be a training. :) Thanks for sharing how we can approach our market niche. You put good thoughts into this and it will be helpful. Which keytool are you using?

Thanks very much! I would have put it in the "training" area here but I'm really new to WA and apparently I have to put in some more time first to get access to that area.;)
