One more thing ...
If you change the slug, basically you change the URL of the given post and that means that you'll have to update and resubmit the sitemap too
Ok, thanks. My concern is changing the title of a post and the website extension. Not sure if Google likes you doing that. I will give it a go.
ok as an example here is my website with the title in question. 'how to open a free online store'
....affiliate.com/how-to-open-a-free-online-store
I want to change the title of the post so should I change the web address to the new title?
OK you are talking about the slug which is the automatically generated URL-friendly version of the post title.
It is also editable end you can change it according to the new post title
I will change that too then. Wondered what the slug was!! Learning every day.
Thanks so much for your help.
Do not change the slug! You can change the title of the page, the SEO title, description, whatever. But once the article is already published NEVER change the slug.
I'll tell you why. There are a bunch of reasons why you shouldn't
Let's say you have a post indexed on Google. It's getting traffic. You change the title and people will still end up on the page even if they see the old title.
You change the slug and someone finds the old version indexed? They'll get a 404 error page. Or if it's linked from somewhere else on the web, let's say you shared it on Twitter, or someone linked to it or maybe you might have even linked to it from another post. You change the slug and all those links pointing back to that article are now dead links that lead to a 404 error page.
Never change the slug. Going forward, just try to set up better slugs.
Ah Ok, that makes complete sense. Just one more question, does the slug have to be the same as the title when you write a new post or can this be shortened? So far the slug has always been the title of the post. Does it effect the keyword SEO etc?
Thank you
Nah it doesn't have to be the same. I always manually change my slugs to something much shorter. Shorter slugs are easier to remember and they're shareable (like on Twitter).
For example if I do a page on How to Make Money With Clickbank my slug would be /clickbank. This way if I remember I had a post on making money with Clickbank, I could just put my website address and add /clickbank and I wouldn't have to go look for the post so that I could copy and paste the long url.
In terms of SEO, I haven't had any problems ranking for terms with the slug shortened vs leaving the slug the same as the title. Many of my review posts don't even have the word review in the slug even though the title is optimized for the review keyword.

What Jay told you about the possible 404 errors it's true ...
But the problem can be solved using redirects ... Just check out the link mentioned by me earlier ...
And of course, as Jay said, you can choose the easiest solution keeping your old slugs and focusing on better slugs for your new posts
Yes, it makes sense actually but I had not even thought of it. If you change the slug, all the social media link etc become void.

I'm nervous to post anything on Google+ now after having had my account suspended. I deleted the last 4 post and they let me off but will not say why it was suspended.
T
So with Google they can be a bit touchy....first..post a post a day or so...don't post a ton at once...that's a quick way to get their attention. Second post relevant material..don't just post ads or links for sale. Post articles with real content, etc. If you end up looking like a sales page they will suspend you. If you post 10 posts a day and they all sell something, they'll suspend you. Basically you need to present yourself as a contributing member of the community and not just selling stuff, etc.
Thanks so much, really helpful. Hopefully I will get this sorted now. It's such a learning curve!!! I was devastated last night when I got suspended but I'm back up and running now so will be more careful.
Thanks again
Dan

Hi, I have just created a new page on my website and there is no reply/comments box at the bottom of the page.
Is there a way of switching this on and off on a new page
Normally if you go to the page from your wp dashboard, and click the "screen options" where you can find at the right top corner, and there is a check box of "comment". That can control the comment box. You can also control each page by going to "edit" the page and check "screen options". Hope it helps!
