Change default user "Admin" in Wordpress

By default, "admin" is set as your first account. This is required in order to create your WordPress website and administration panel.

This Should Be Changed
  • For Security
  • For Professionalism

Software is designed knowing that new websites are created by default using admin. A brute force attack will use this username on newly created websites because it's faster to hack. Some people ask about WordPress security and this little step will bump that security up a level.

Changing is simple and no worries about messing up content ownership, or blog post ownership.

  1. Log into your website
  2. Go to "Users"
  3. Click "Add New"
  4. Fill out details - Make sure you select "Administrator"
  5. Click "Add New User" at the bottom

Now that you created your new user, its time to log out and then log back in with your new user.

After you're logged back in:

  1. Go back to "Users"
  2. Hover over "Admin" and select "Delete"
  3. You will be given a choice to transfer all content.
    (Careful Not To Delete Instead)

((((NOTE))))

--- WordPress won't allow you to use the same email for two accounts. You may have to change your current email address on your profile before creating your new user account. If needed, create a free G-mail account for junk email purposes.

After seeing this question pop up, I thought a nice walk-through would be helpful. It would be wise to do this sooner then later.

Thanks! I almost deleted my posts, good thing it has confirmation dialogue box. haha...

Thank you for this post !
:)

you the man, thank you

Thanks for this 'tutorial' and just changed the admin status. I used another email address to register. Once that's done, I went back to delete the original admin. Then I edit my email to the first email that I had used before (under original admin) and my gravatar profile image followed suit!

I too was just thinking about this today, but did not go looking for the answer, yet somehow found myself here. Weird. Cool. Thanks...

Thanks for this easy _How To"!

Upon following your Instructions for changing default user this message returned: ERROR: This email is already registered, please choose another one.

YES

WordPress wont allow for 2 accounts with same email.

If you want to use the same email then go to your profile page and change your email to a different one and save it.

When you do this, it will allow you to use the original email again.

Great thanks I was thinking about this today perfect timing

Sweet! Ha ha

Happy New Year!

If I only knew it a year ago! I had it somewhere as idea, but never tried! Now it seems so logical! Thank you, anyway!
