Do You suffer from Food Allergies ?
A few days ago I posted about the effects of diet on our productivity. I headed it as a “Time Management Tip.”
The comments were underwhelming. I didn’t see too much enthusiasm, particularly when the subject of a Vegan Diet came up.
Many people could not even dream of a day without meat, eggs, cheese, milk, ice cream, custard, etc etc etc.
The fact still remains, and it is backed up by overwhelming evidence, that the foods we eat today are damaging us.
Heart Disease, Cancers, Diabetes – could all be seriously reduced with a more effective diet.
But unfortunately, this will never happen so long as the Food Manufacturers and the Drug Companies have such a big say in our lifestyles.
So in that post, I referred to a specific food additive that has been around for quite a while. There is a feeling that it is the root cause of many people’s allergic reactions to various foods.
It slipped in under the radar a good few years ago. Over the years, several studies have been set up to look at this additive, but none have been conclusive.
It is a preservative which is added to un-saturated vegetable oils and edible fats. It goes by the name of E319, but this is often not specified on packaging labels. The full name for this chemical is tert Butylhydroquinone.
Could tBHQ be causing your allergies ?
It comes from a chemical family that includes Butane, which is used in lighter fuel, and a similar chemical is added to varnishes, lacquers, resins and oil field additives.
The theory is that this chemical, when in our body, causes damage to our immune system. Adverse reactions make certain proteins fight against foods, which cause our allergy problems, These allergies are then treated by – you’ve guessed it – more chemicals and drugs prescribed by your doctor.
Food manufacturers are driven by profit, and preservatives in food are needed so that foodstuffs last longer on the supermarket shelves, and more product is sold before it “goes off.”
The best thing is to give a wide berth to those processed food items that contain multiple lines of ingredients including references to colourings and preservatives.
The more “natural” foods you eat, the more chance you have of avoiding preservatives like tBHQ.

Bon Appetit.

Hi Chris
I have been on a vegetarian diet for almost 40 years. Never felt better or looking healthier. Approaching 70 this year and have more energy now than I had twenty years ago. I don't preach about the harmful effects of meat everyone has a choice. From a health point of view, I try to eat enough protein, carbs, fruit etc
Hey Richard, yes you look a good advert for natural foods. And yes, everyone has their choice. Best wishes, Chris
Thank you so much for posting about this food additive Chris, there is so much wrong in the processed foods we can buy from supermarkets. Yes, I agree, I sometimes think the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry are working in collusion, so many foods make us ill and cause us to make doctors visits.:-))
Hi Stephanie, I think the money rules unfortunately, and the Doctors should know better. Just got to eat as natural as we can. Regards, Chris
Thanks for the warning. I must admit, I know very little about the additives in what I eat. When I live in the north, I hunted all my own meat and a lot of my own vegetables. Now everything is store bought.
Sounds great hunting and growing your own. Yes, watch out for those labels with all the additives in.
I suffered from animal allergies until about 10 years ago and a very professional non-medical practitioner taught me how to eat properly, what to eat, what to avoid and since then I don't have it anymore! :) Happy Gerlinde since then, lol!
You are right, we have to be aware of what we are eating...
Great post...
That's a good story, Gerlinde. If you ever want to do a post on my website, give me a shout. It would be good to share it.
Lucky for me, I have no known food allergies. I never knew about the same chemical as butane in foods. It never caused any allergic reaction, but it gave me the chills reading about it in foods.
Hi Karin, just got to keep watching out for the labels and look for the nasty additives. Best wishes, Chris

So true. I read this morning from Msn how a woman lost weight by dealing with food allergies.
We are what we eat.
Thanks for comments. Regards, Chris
