Next Step: Research
Now I have my site up and able to track visits. I have a contact form, privacy policy, term of service. Now I need content, but first I want to make sure my efforts aren't fruitless.
I want to get on the first page of google for "work from home", so what do I do? I make sure "work from home" is on my header, or footer, or sidebar prominently for google to pickup. It should be in an "H" tag on the homepage for google to pickup it's importance on my site. It should be on the header/footer/sidebar because those sections will be on every page getting indexed. To accomplish this - I will change my category posting from "jobs" to "work from home jobs" and I will place a little about us section at the footer with the term "work from home" as well. It will of course be in my meta description as well. This will tell google's indexer I am relevant for the term, and It will at least get me ranked quicker.
Now I need more terms to rank for as I don't want to put my chickens in one basket. I go to one of my keyword tools and check out what people are searching for and find 5-10 keywords relevant to my niche. They are each getting thousands of searches a month and have low competition. I shouldn't have difficulty ranking as long as I have a few articles indexed with those keywords. I would then just need to have more "authority" than those sites to rank above them. This is done via backlinks, the more sites are linking back to me, the more google thinks I am an authority and have trust.
I should also point out sales flow. Some of the people on WA are trying to rank for a keyword that isn't for people ready to buy. "Work from Home" is a high funnel keyword, they are just getting info not looking to buy a guide. My goal is to be the information source not the sales source, so this works for me not others. There is what they call a sales funnel to help differentiate the spot buyers are. First in the sales funnel is general inquiry, they don't know what they are looking for. Take mountain running shoes for example. They will start with either shoes or running shoes. If you spend you effort here, you will get traffic for people not looking to buy. Next they might have some idea of what they are looking for, nike rubber sole running shoes, or spiked running shoes. Some of these might be ready to buy, but the next group usually are. They are searching for mountain running shoes prices, running shoe stores near me, shoe stores near me, nike model #xxxx shoes. Most WA people should be targeting keywords here not for "Craft help", but rather "paper airplane making training".
Recap: I have my keywords already picked out and ready to make my content with those keywords. It's better to have a natural flow and not worry about keywords, but if you have a plan ahead you can do both, have a natural flowing article with the keyword scattered around. My footer, meta description, and sidebar has the keyword "work from home" in it. At this point in the game, it's just content building and when my site has a decent enough amount, I will promote it to get traffic and followers to spread my content.
Progress:
"work from home" - unranked
Domain Name: indexed.
