The literal meaning of this proverb is that the strength of a chain is limited to that of the weakest link in the chain. Even if the other links on the chain are strong, the strength of the chain depends on the weakest link.
Have you ever seen the movie "300"?
For those who haven't, the story takes place in 480 B.C., between Persia, led by King Xerxes and Greece, led by Leonidas, king of the Greek city state of Sparta. Now even though Leonidas went into battle with only 300 men, many believe he would have conquered the army of Persia if only his plan didn't have one fatal flaw: The weak link - Ephialtes.
It was Ephialtes who betrayed Leonidas and all of Greece by revealing a secret pathway that allowed Xerxes and his army to finally surround the Spartans. It was a tragic end to a very heroic movie.
I however want to focus on the important role Ephialtes played in the fall of the Spartan army. You see, Leonidas belived his army to be nigh invincible. They were Spartans for crying out loud! These guys were built for battle right from birth...literally.
He had so much confidence in his men that he ignored the obvious pain and disappointment in Ephialtes' eyes when he turned him down from joining his army. He least expected the response to be a betrayal that would cost him his life and that of 300 men!
