I love spam comments!
For anyone who hasn't noticed yet, whenever you receive a comment, you can edit basically everything except the IP. This means that you can turn spam into gold! Just edit whatever nonsense the comment says into something productive, get rid of the backlinks, and then respond to it. Sure, it's a cheap tactic, but SOMEONE is paying some service to spam these comments everywhere. Why let their money go to waste? ;)

I'm curious about this. Is there anyway this method can have a backwards effect on your SEO? I don't think it's right to do this...
The only thing I can think of is if google links those comment IP's with spam. That might lead to a negative effect but there's a lot of "if''s" involved.
Hi - would you not end up with loads of irrelevant "I can improve your SEO rankings" comments against your hard worked posts though? Wouldn't that damage your reputation with your genuine visitors... what I mean is, if they see relevant posts, and constructive comments, would they not be more inclined to read on/follow/join, as opposed to seeing countless, pathetic comments obviously driven by bots, saturating your otherwise relevant, and useful content?
Just a thought. It would be good if you could report back to the community, if this affects your particular website, one way or the other (I sincerely hope it does not degrade it any).

You edit their comments to your liking and respond to it. You`ll also want to change their name if you need to and get rid of the backlink. As for degrading my website, I do have some slight concern that these IP addressees are marked by google as spam sources, but I`m willing to take the risk on that.
I think I like you......you finally gave some good hard advice about a way to fight against spam comments and use them to your ultimate advantage........I just got done deleting 2 of my spam commments and i wish i saw this post before I did :P well 2 years later, but always good to have a post like this up. hope your doing good (that is if your still around)
Heh. Used to get a thousand or more spam comments a day on my main site. How many of them were even close to the topic of the page? Very few. Basically none. Rewriting would be ... tedious. :)
I'll admit to having rewritten a couple, though. Such as the ones that praise my review of some CB product and then drop their own naked CB affiliate link. Clipped the link, kept the comment.
Heck, I could probably get better results by twittering or micro-blogging (tumblr, scoop.it, etc.) than rewriting comments.
tedious it may be but if it means getting ranked(and later getting plenty of REAL engagement) I`ll do it until my fingers bleed!
Lol instead of clipping the link, you coulda switched it out with your own.
As for results, I;m not sure what methods work best, but i do like the idea of adding something directly to my site rather than some 3rd party platform.
3rd party platform is links back to you, for the same work, and maybe getting some new engagement.
Still, I'm sympathetic. I get a lot of traffic on the main site (conversion is another issue...) and real comments are very rare.
I do do the basic social bookmarking with a comment. IMO though the traffic you get from search is much more targeted and more likely to engage and convert. That`s why I always make ranking my first priority.
you know what you do, just copy and paste good feed back and reword it.....I mean if wordpress allows you to edit comments then shoot, by all means modify away those spam comments and show them whos boss
I like to think of it as fighting fire with fire. You would just delete those spam comments anyways. To me, ethics only has to do with what does or doesn`t harm others.
That's the beauty of it all, you don't have to agree with me, or even justify your decision to use this technique or not. If you are comfortable doing it, then rock on. I am no, so I won't.

Well, why not? The only thing I would object to is the reflection on WA if you were discovered. I don't think we have any courses in cheating!
But we're already cheating with all those comment share threads. Those aren't ``organic`` comments at all!
Soooooooooo true; we are all helping one another out within WA to request artificial comments to blog posts... and Google has no clue

I'd love to try it out... Not sure if I will - my conscience may say it's unethical... any thoughts on this?
How does your conscience play into this? You discovered a new technique and you pity your competition? Think about why you came to WA in the first place.
I am literally responding to everyone here; but 2 years later lol......dont even know if any of you are still around.....but even if it is unethical it is for the purpose of self promotions when you are ranked high enough the natural comments willl flow naturally and then you can stop :)
I've been considering doing this myself. The only problem is, some people use names like liveshemalecam......lol
You can edit that too. The only thing you can't change is the IP. If you could, you could just spend all day writing back and forth comments with yourself lol.
LOL ! I am laughing so hard right now because i just had got a Spam comment and believe it or not I Edit the comment and made it Realiable due to my Page !

So bro actually do you use akismet or convert the every incoming comment into gold?
Not ready to use akismet when my traffic isn't even breaking 100 a day yet. I usually just convert the comments where they actually manage to stay on topic.
