Disney at home part 1
TODAY'S POST - Recipes for Disney Treats Part 1
One of the best things on a hot summer day is Disney's Dole Whip Frozen Treat. If you have ever had it then you know what I mean. Get ready for a major treat as this is the recipe for today. Other make at home Disney treats will be coming in future posts. Throughout the summer these recipes will also be showing up on our website disneyforkids.com.
Destination - Walt Disney World
Early March 2020 - As a teacher, I was enjoying our spring break, thinking about Disney's Dole Whip Frozen Treat (recipe below), and excited to be finally looking online to make reservations for our family trip to Walt Disney World! The last day of school was May 22 and that evening we would be on our way to the vacation we had been planning for the past two years. Just before pressing the send button for our reservations, the news highlighted some kind of virus in China. It had been on the news before and, although it probably wouldn't amount to anything, I decided to hold off on the reservations for a couple of weeks.
Late March 2020 - "Sorry kids, not this year." We were all pretty bummed out.
Destination - Disney At Home
Not willing to let the disappointment get the best of us, we pulled together and decided to do Disney at Home. In the following weeks we came up with all kinds of fun and interesting ways to bring Disney Magic to us. In this, and following posts, I will share with you a few of the things we discovered that you too can do at home.
Sitting at my desk in a deserted classroom, keeping my students interested in this new thing called distance delivery meant coming up with some things I would not have done had school continued as usual. Things like virtual field trips to Walt Disney World and having students design their own theme parks. More on this in a future post.
For me, personally, I love music. So, while designing lessons to keep my students engaged in their school work, I found some of the best Disney music. The downside to that is sometimes I would forget what I was supposed to be doing and sing along with the music. Look for more on this in an upcoming post.
Disney's Dole Whip Frozen Pineapple Treat - The Recipe
Of my many wonderful memories of Disneyland, one that stands out is sitting with my family by The Enchanted Tiki Room on a very hot day enjoying Disney's Dole Whip Frozen Treat. As spring left and the warm days of summer began, I found several "authentic" recipes to make at home. Of course, I had to try them all out. The recipe that won our votes is one that Disney released as their official Dole Whip recipe.
We ended up changing the amount of the ingredients for three reasons: 1) because of sizes of products available in area, 2) we have a family of four and their recipe is a little on the small side, and 3) I like ice cream. However, the ingredients themselves remain the same. I will post the Disney recipe ingredient sizes first and then the sizes for the way we make it for our family of four.
Disney Ingredients/ Sizes
- 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream
- 4 ounces of pineapple juice
- 2 cups of frozen pineapple chunks
Our Family Ingredients/ Sizes
- One cup vanilla ice cream (get one with the highest fat content for making it creamy)
- One six ounce can of Dole Pineapple Juice
- One twenty ounce can of frozen Dole Pineapple Chunks (use Dole if possible for the best quality)
Directions
Make sure the pineapple chunks are frozen. I put a can in the freezer several hours before intended use. Soak the frozen can in a bowl of hot water for about 5 minutes just to be able to get it out of the can. Put the chunks in a large plastic bag and break it up with a hammer into several large chunks, but small enough to get into the blender. The pineapple is much softer than frozen water so it is pretty easy.
Add all three ingredients into a blender and blend until it's smooth. Disney suggests putting the blended mixture into a piping bag and making it swirl into your bowl for a more finished and professional look. Then, for fun, you can put a garnish of a pineapple slice with a cocktail umbrella on the side of the dish. Of course, a slice of fresh pineapple is best.
And there you have it. Easy, right?
