Don't just link to your blog, link to everyone blog relevant to your niche. This builds trust and loyalty in the minds of the reader. You will always go back to a blog page that you trust.
Imagine 3 site competing for the same niche title. Site 1 only links to site 1, site 2 only links to site 2 and site 3 links to every site including site 1 and site 2. Which site do you think is going to become the authority in this particular niche?
Site 3 will becomes the authority by telling readers what is good everywhere. A good blog links to everyone, not just its own blog or friendly blogs. Link to your enemies, link to your competitors, link to everyone. Side note: This also works great because when you link to other sites they will link right back to your site which can increase your ranking and authority in google. Be the absolute best source you can be for your readers and they will reward you with lots of traffic.

Having appropriate back-links that are relevant to you niche is a very good thing. Google takes your back-links into consideration when ranking your site on the internet. Back-links can be bad if you are just getting back links to boast your ranking and it is not relevant to you topic at all. I hoppe this clears things up for you.

Its really easy. Just go onto the site. Read the blog, then leave a good comment with your website URL and that's it.
