Website Business - A Reality Check

I have been writing posts promoting Wealthy Affiliate for a website I created for the Super Affiliate Challenge. In those posts I discussed the great business opportunities offered by the explosive growth of the Internet and the increased use of mobile phones. My emphasis has been on describing Affiliate Sales. I strongly believe in this opportunity, especially for Seniors like myself.

However, I thought that I should also investigate and write about the obstacles to overcome. I searched for facts, and what I found surprised and worried me. Honesty demands that I share these concerns with fellow members of the WA community.

The Facts

- In 2018 the number of worldwide websites was approximately 1.7 billion

- The number of web pages that are indexed and searched by Google is approximately 60 trillion.

- Only 1 out of 3000 pages published on the Internet are indexed and searched by Google

- 3.5 billion searches of Google daily.

What these numbers tell me

- When we are talking billions and trillions my home made website is hopelessly outmatched.

- If your website is indexed by Google you are doing something right.Congratulations!

- However, just being indexed does not mean that a visitor who searches your keyword will find you. It depends on how high you rank within Google.

- If your website is about a broad subject, and of a general nature, you will be competing with probably millions of similar websites. You will get zero traffic.

- The numbers highlight the need for focusing on a micro niche with low competition. So it is vital that you use Jaaxy to select a keyword for your website that has low competition.

- The number of sites that Google crawls daily seems to be a secret. Google does not report this number. However, the frequency depends on the quality and ranking of the URL. Some URLs may be revisited daily for updates, others only every 6 months or so,

- In order to get organic traffic in Google it is key to get a high ranking. This brings me to the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization

In my search I found a multitude of Companies that specialize in SEO. SEO is now a science, evolving as the Google algorithms change. There are too many variables, too many factors affecting the website ranking within Google. I can not compete with the experts in the field just using my superficial knowledge of SEO.

Time to Take Action

I treat my website as a business that eventually will be profitable. It is not a hobby. As a businessman I know that I must outsource those tasks that I can not perform well by myself, or are too time-consuming. I want to focus on what I do well, which is research and writing content. Therefore, I am starting a search for an individual or Company that can take over the task of improving my Google rankings and provide regular support,at a nominal cost.

Even with improved Google rankings the probability of getting meaningful organic traffic is very small. I will focus on generating my own traffic using social media (Facebook) and advertising in Bing.

The learning process continues.

I would like to hear your comments on my analysis. Anything I am missing?

Thanks

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

With all that information you have written down, it may seem like it's a near hopeless cause, but trust me, it's definitely not!

I recreated my website(so i deleted my old one) a little more than 6 months ago and didn't do anything with it for 3 months, so it was completely empty,

I was focusing on building some other more complicated websites, so i kinda left that one alone, however when things didn't work out with social media, i decided to focus more on the organic traffic,

So i started building content my completely empty website, i follow Kyle and Jay's training, plus i read a lot of other training out there and implemented them as well,

I made same mistakes here and there as well, but i any case, now 3 months further, i have 68 posts(and I'm focusing on 2500-3000 words on each post), nearly all of them are ranked and now at this moment I'm getting traffic every single day,

Not to mention that i made $120 in my last month and in the first 7 days of July i already made another $200, so the training here and the extra training definitely works(this is not for boasting my success),

Don't be too focused on the statistics and what competition may be out there, you are unique, that is enough, focus on doing your own thing and trust that the training here really works,

I just wanted to give you my take on it and what has worked for me,

Don't give competition too much importance, focus on your own business and learn from the competition, there is enough for everyone. :)

I wish you much success in your online adventures,

Mark.

Hello Mark, Thank you for your comment. My blog was not intended to paint a hopeless picture of Affiliate Sales or Internet Marketing. But it highlights the obstacles that need to be overcome to succeed. Knowing that the competition in the broad market is huge, helps us to identify a small segment of the market in which we can be successful .We should not be afraid of the reality and hide our head in the sand and pretend that everything is rosy.
Actually your success proves my point. You are active in a very small micro-niche. Teaching a language to foreign speakers.
You have special knowledge ,because of your worldwide travels, that enable you to give meaningful advice and support.
Each of us has a special talent. We should find our unique talent and develop a website ,and business, in that area.
We are all unique, but capable of great things.

Carlos, the truth hurts! You have done a great post on a subject that few wish to engage in. It is much better to tell ourselves that our websites are being visited by thousands ever day, when the truth of the matter, some may never be visited!
Great job and good research.
Thanks for the candor.

Joe, thanks for the comment. I want to learn all I can about Internet Marketing and Affiliate Sales. Facing my shortcomings and identifying what is important to learn is the first step. I do not have time to pat myself on the back. My ego is not at stake.
Thanks again
Carlos
P.S. I enjoy reading your posts.
