Can I use a blog post from another site?

Cruising through some sites that are in the same niche as mine I came across a post that is really great information that I would love to post to my site. Is this possible? Do I contact the site or the author, or is this something not done. I'm asking because I really am an internet dummy and have no idea if this is even a thing.

You can definitely read others blogs and get ideas from them but NEVER copy their work word for word. Kyle has stated this much better than I am but you get the idea.

if it's someone else's content you should contact them. perhaps reference it in your post and provide a backlink to it
if you use it give credit to the author

I often get an idea for a post from other people's blogs. I will always write my own material. I usually research more than one source. When I talk about a specific subject that is discussed in my source I will link that talking point to the source were got the original information. If my source is a university, a recognize publication, an established non-profit or a think-tank linking to their website establishes my external link and boosts my search engine ranking. I will let the author of the original post know I linked to them. That can lead to a link back from the original author.

Check the rules here at WA. They are pretty specific in regards to external links. Specifically, the rules state that our articles must be complete within themselves. An abstract linked to the original is forbidden.

Kenny has your answer. It is my understanding this would be considered plagiarism. You may write about the same topic but in your own words.

A good post especially to get Kyle's take!

You could try this, it's called reblogging

You have the answers below, which should answer your question.

you may find other websites within your niche will have similar content, but it is how you personally write your own content, in other words you may make the same point as a competitor, but be sure to word it your way and in your own unique style. Hope that helps

Hi Candace
Much better creating a similar post and link to those other ones as a source of further information.
Search engines love relevant external links.

Candace, I think you can't put the whole thing but "some" to make a point. I hope I made it clear.

I'll wait around and find out from others what they will say.

Hope I didn't burst your bubble.

frank

No bursting here. It was just a great blog.
