What is the difference between a creating a website and a local website? I want to create a local website to generate leads for my insurance business.

Hello and for my penny worth you should specify the Demographic. and even the age group, gender etc
1. Your blog will be targeted to that area and those people because - .
2. Google and other search engines will recognize these facts and rank accordingly.

It should also show up in your Analytics.

Have a nice day.

When building a website for a local business how do you go about using keywords, I mean with a blog you are constantly adding new posts so, as taught, use them in the title & first paragraph. But how would you go about using a list of, say, 5 keywords/phrases in a local business website without it looking odd ?

Greetings Richard!

I'm not sure I understand the question. Normally you'd create 5 pages or posts, each focusing on a single keyword - and build the website around them.

Are you trying to get a single piece of content to rank for 5 unrelated keywords? Could be a tough sell to the search engines!

Dennis

Hi Prestones, What I mean is if you are creating a site the way WA teaches you ie an information site on, say, dieting. You would write blog posts on different subjects after doing keyword research. Lose weight by ........ But if you were building a website for your new business you wouldn't be creating posts on a subject you would have your standard home page, contact us, about us, services offered that kind of thing. So as you are not creating a post on xyz it wouldn't be "as taught" would it. I am assuming you would use the "All in One Seo" tool on wordpress (havent heard that mentioned so far in tutorials) & add keywords using that? Let's say you were building a website for a webdesign company in xyz. It would probably be easy to use a keyword in the opening "about us" paragraph but other than that to keep including keywords on the site may look a bit odd as you would be trying to work text around them. Does this make more sense.
Thankyou for taking the time to read :)
Richard

Hi Richard -

You don't actually put a keyword into the SEO plugin. You research and find the keyword you'd like to use in your post or page, and the SEO plugin simply keeps track of whether you've included the keyword in your URL, in a heading, in an Alt tag for an image, and in your content. The choice of the keyword is all yours however - as is how you decide to incorporate that keyword.

The name of the game is to choose a niche that facilitates getting traffic and can be monetized readily. Within that niche, you select keywords to draw traffic to your site. The keywords may be informational (How to...), commercial (Buy now!), product review, etc.

Keep in mind that a keyword is not just a single word - it's a phrase that's related to the niche you've chosen. For a bit more about keyword research and usage, see the comment linked at Hope this helps!

Dennis

Hi Dennis, thankyou, no i understand when it comes to finding a niche & using the keyword to monetise it I am doing that as well. BUt i was refering to starting an "actual local business" & building a website for that.

The same keyword research and selection process holds true for your local business Richard - or any local business.

You might find keywords that include geotargeting for a local business ("best Manhattan dry cleaner") and build pages and posts around those keywords.

Using the insurance business as an example:

If your business covers a specific geographic area (due to license limitations), specializes in some type of insurance (travel insurance), targets specific audiences (need help fine tuning the insurance for your small business?), or targets specialty audiences (insurance to cover a possible winner at a hole-in-one golf promotion).

If your business handles many such areas, specialties, audiences, etc., you can write pages and posts related to each - one keyword per article.

All of these conditions set the framework for your keyword research. Once you've found keywords with relatively light competition (both number and size of the competitors) with a reasonable amount of traffic, go for it!

Dennis

Fair enough as I thought really, just choose one keyword (as per Jay's tutorials - Magistudios) just some of the tutorials are dated on here & so much changes with Google doesn't it. Mine isnt the insurance company that was @Bumpa i think I've just hijacked his thread lol. I've decided to start a webdesign company you see Media23.co.uk < Still building atm. So DONT fill in keywords in the All-In-One-SEO plug in then ? ahh ive been adding loads of keywords in that lol, had i better change that, tbh i thought thats what they were there for. Webdesign No problem / SEO i'm still learning everyday. Thats what ive been doing learning everyday & watching loads of tutorials before I take the plunge. Just trying to work out what STILL works in 2015 & what doesn't

What Paul says. And when you do your keyword research, try to do it for the country that you want to rank for.

I agree, although nothing looks worse than site content which spells words like "colour" both ways to try to game Google.

I didn't know that Paul. So would keyword's be different, in let's say Ireland. As As apposed to USA ?

No, not at all. Let's say I'm selling insurance products. An international website would advertise my products all over the UK, allowing people to buy directly through my website. If, however, I was a furniture restorer, I might only want to work with people within a twenty mile radius. So my website would focus on keywords that were locally focused: The best furniture restorer in bristol; cheap furniture repairs north bristol; Pick up and deliver furniture restorer bristol, bath, chippenham, gloucester.

The site content would major on your accessibility, local knowledge etc.

Be clear in your own mind that you want local customers, and more importantly, that they want you. I write online content, so there's not much point in me targeting my site on local customers. I mention my location on the site, and I rank well for phrases like "copywriter in bristol" where I'm on page one as part of Google Local. This is just in case the odd person wants someone to look in the eye. But my business comes from all over the world so no one really cares about how I love the Cotswold Hills etc..

Thank you Paul. I understand now. I will follow suit. I love the Cotswolds. I was born in Leamington Spa, not far from there. Thank's again.

The difference will be in the keywords you select, but the website will be the same whether it's local or international.

Thanks Paul Dean, I'll try it.

and the extension of your domain. If you are in New Zealand, like I am, an extension like .co.nz will rank you easier than a .com

Does anyone know where I can get for free photos (images) of professional athletes to insert into my articles?

http://www.photobucket.com is another good source. Check it out when time permits.

You have to be extremely wary with services such as PhotoBucket, Flickr et al. You'll find that often the person uploading the image isn't the copyright holder, and pictures that depict people or private property are unlikely to have "model releases". Rich.

I just want to give you a heads-up that there are two issues regarding the use of free photos that depict people. Firstly, the copyright holder must have released it into the public domain and secondly the person or persons depicted must have signed a model release. The "image rights" of an individual especially if they're famous makes it extremely unlikely that there are any available for commercial use. Even if the copyright holder, ie. the photographer, snapped one of a professional athlete and released it into the public domain, it won't have an associated model release. http://www.fotolia.com/Info/Release/View/release_adult If you use such an image in any way that "adds value" to a commercial proposition you open yourself up to the risk of substantial costs and damages. It's why you'll see some pictures in stock libraries, labelled "editorial use only". Rich.

Thanks for your reply. So I was wondering where do most WA members get their photos from? I recently read somewhere that even if you take a picture yourself, you can still be in violation.

Yes. If the picture contains people or private property it would need a signed release for "commercial" use. You can use legitimate free resources, such as Microsoft http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/images/ or pay a $1 or less a time at stock libraries such as Fotolia http://www.us.fotolia.com or 123RF http://www.123rf.com etc. There are thousands of specialist stock libraries as well but the prices are often a lot higher, ie. starting at $25+ per image. Rich.

Here is a great place. http://morguefile.com/archive

Thanks for your reply, I was looking more for a bunch of professional and non-professional athletes to use, that website seems so generic and there's so much to go through.

I was wondering what type of cell phone WA community uses for WA work if they are not using a computer. I'm contemplating getting a new cell phone because I don't really like

I'm a choir boy for the Fruit God and find that I don't tend to work on my site per se using either my iPhone or iPad. That said, there are smartphone apps for both iOS and Android. For iOS there's WordPress itself http://d.pr/hTKk and excellent third-party offerings such as Blogsy http://blogsyapp.com/. I find that I tend to use mobile devices to make cross-platform notes using Wunderlist http://www.wunderlist.com or write using iAWriter http://d.pr/7OW6 or do my research and training. :) Rich.

How does a person continue to go about this whole IM business and remain incognito? Do we need to set up different accounts (gmail, streetarcticles, etc) under our so called pen

It's possible, but it takes a lot of work, over an extended period of time, and lots of attention to detail. There are many ways to get 'identified', through various things that get indexed in Google.

One thing I have had trouble with in keeping privacy, is using social media. It depends on how 'far' your pseudonym goes, changing your name completely, or just keeping a surname private. I believe Facebook AND Google+ require a 'real' name to sign up, so it may depend on how you interpret their TOS. IE this means you will need a completely new Facebook account to 'like' any of your work.

Another issue I had was with consistency. With the speed of information and all the various activities (personal and business), it's likely that you'll slip up somewhere. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it does take some real attention to detail.

Thanks as that was more of what I was looking for. I don't have any social media accounts because I wanted to keep private. So by choosing to keep everything pseudonym in all my social media is fine with me.

Yep, I was on the same page with you nathaniell about it. Great advise!!!!!

It's certainly possible as I've done it. In my case I was in full time employment when I started here, and many companies keep tabs on their employees online behaviour, so I wasn't willing to risk getting axed from my job or overlooked for promotion if this hadn't worked out. However, it's slightly different from deterring the casual browser to avoiding a determined searcher "identifying" you. I simply decided to use my Mother's Maiden name. In the UK, it's made easier because you're entitled to use any name you like as long as it's not for the intent to defraud someone. You can just use the name, or fill in a Deed Poll as I did https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll which is simply a declaration form http://hmctsformfinder.justice.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/loc021-eng.pdf which you get witnessed by a solicitor and you can open bank accounts, get a driver's licence, passport, etc. in your new name. That said, you then have to be careful not to link your new identity with your old one, ie. social networking, etc. Rich.

Thanks for responding, I was not looking to change my identity. I just wanted to keep myself and my IM business identity separate. In WA my user name is bumpa, but my real name is Duke. As I get into writing articles and signing up for things related to IM, I wanted to pick a pen name (not bumpa). So my real question is, should I be registering all of my accounts under a pen name rather than my real name. I'm guessing that my pen name would become my brand name. Hope that makes a little more sense.

Hi bumpa, I am not 1oo% sure but it is not possible to do that here this about who your are and thought you can, not tell anyone about yourself I think it would be not good to
hide it. Now you can write with a pen name at the submissions sites as I do with my croninweb but when filling out the profile and contact they want the real deal. So many cons going on is why i think. You can just not give out information and it is alright and stay in a zone to where you feel okay. I saw no one had answered you so i decided to take a shot at it. I would PM this to The owners Carson Or Kyle and they can give the best thoughts on it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response, I did think to PM Kyle and Carson, but I thought others would like to know the answer also. I recall reading a post about someone not wanting to use their real name for legal reasons so I thought others have the same concerns. I believe it's very possible in fact I think a good share of us here is doing it already. Unless we need to register with our SS#, we can always hide behind who we are.

Yep many do---I think it is a trust factor so we hide --so then people see that and they dont trust us and they hide back by not wanting ti look at our offerings. However it is all what we are wanting to achieve online? have a good night --I am off to bed.

I just got my first article approved and published! What an awesome feeling. Only thing is that I didn't want my real name as the author. Does anyone know how I can change it? <

To do this you can click on "Author Settings" on the far right hand side of the main menu at Street Articles. You will see our author name show up and you will be able to change it from that page.
