Seventy-Seven Sunset Strip
Do you remember 77 Sunset Strip which aired for six years starting in 1958? It was my first favorite TV show. The producers were Roy Huggins and Warner Brothers.
Huggins left the show after a dispute with his co-owner and went on to produce other famous TV series: Maverick, The Fugitive - another favorite of mine - and The Rockford Files.
The three top stars were Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. Roger Smith and Edd Byrnes. Roger and Efrem had the lead roles, but they were not the only ones to garner fame from this show. You had the telephone operator with a French accent played by Jacqueline Beer and who could forget Kookie with his ubiquitous comb, played by Ed Byrne.
Their PI office was at 77 Sunset Boulevard, which the Hollywood set referred to as Sunset Strip. The office was next to another famous landmark, Dean Martin's Dino's Lounge.
And yes the theme song. As soon as I heard that theme song playing Seventy-Seven Sunset, [repeat] Seventy-Seven Sunset Strip, then the big band sound kicks in. Who could resist running to their TV to watch it?
