Help Wanted: Cracking the Affiliate Code
Hey, awesome WA members! I need your wisdom on something that’s been buzzing around my brain lately. Here’s the deal: I’ve recently joined CJ Affiliates (woohoo!) and partnered up with some fantastic advertisers. But I’ve stumbled into a bit of a conundrum that only you, my savvy affiliate loving audience, might be able to untangle.
So, here’s my question: If a partnership's "serviceable area" lists Canada or the USA, does that mean I’ll only earn commissions if my website visitors are based in those regions?
Why am I confused, you ask? (I’m glad you did!) Well, here’s the kicker: When I search for dreamy vacation spots in, say, sunny Mexico, I can generate affiliate links no problem - even when the serviceable area says “Canada.” 🤔
Does that mean only Canadian sun-seekers can click and book through my links, leaving my friends across the border and beyond out of the equation? Or does it mean the serviceable area refers to me (since I’m based in Canada), not my globe-trotting audience?
Why This Matters - Save me from making newbie linking mistakes!
- If it is audience-based, does this mean I need to start wearing a Mountie hat on my homepage to declare my Canadian identity? 🍁
- And if my American readers can’t help but click my link for a luxury resort in Cabo, will I hear the sad sound of no commission payments echoing in the distance? 😢
- What about global readers dreaming of sipping margaritas on a Mexican beach? Will their clicks get left out in the cold like a forgotten poutine? 🧊🍟

Well I can only answer that with an example Brian...
A while back I lived in Australia and wanted to rent a car so I began my search online to do just that.
I booked a car in Australia for Australian residents.... haha
Why am I laughing? Well as a long time affiliate who researches what he loves doing, soon realised I rented a car from another affiliates website located in Canada???

That was the light switching on if you're wondering

I know it is a lot of reading, you might read the terms and conditions of the contract. It should be in the fine print somewhere. Each vendor has different rules.
