I was looking through my emails this morning and discovered this very good list from Manta about Domain Names:

Here are few things to consider when choosing your domain:

1) Try To Include A Primary Keyword – If you are an electrician including words like ‘electric’ or ‘electrician’ can be a big help in getting found online.

2) Include A Geographic Marker – If you are a local business, including your city name can help you get found in local search.

3) Make It Easy To Type – Avoid using slang and cute misspellings like ‘dezine’ instead of ‘design’, or ‘u’ instead of ‘you’.

4) Keep it short – Shorter domain names are easier to remember and share.

5) Avoid Hyphens and Underscores – Underscores and hyphens are confusing and make it more difficult for people to remember.

6) Research It – Make sure your domain is not infringing on any existing copyrights or trademarks.

7) Register All Appropriate TLDs – Top-level domains (TLDs) refers to the extension associated with your domain (for instance .com, .net, .co, etc.).

If possible you want to ensure that your business is not confused with others in your niche. If you own dallasglass.net, buying dallasglass.com and dallasglass.co helps to ensure that a competitor will not use a similar domain.

8) Register Common Misspellings – If your domain contains words which are commonly misspelled, you should consider registering those misspellings as well and redirecting them to your primary domain.
