Happy Labor or Labour Day - Who Celebrates & When

Every first Monday in September, I feel that familiar shift in the air. Grills come out, stores hang “last summer sale” signs, and a long weekend arrives like a thank-you note written in sunshine. Ahh!

This is how I am feeling today, Friday September 4, 2026. In the United States and Canada, it is Labor Day, or Labour Day north of the border, and it has always felt like more than a day off to me.

HOW AND WHEN LABOR DAY STARTED

The holiday grew out of the hard-fought labor movement. In 1882, thousands of workers marched through New York City and also in Canadian cities after Toronto printers struck in 1872.

Both countries made the first Monday in September an official holiday in 1894. Labor Day (USA) and Labour Day (Canada). The American date sat neatly between Independence Day & Thanksgiving,

Both September holidays deliberately stood apart from May 1, which became linked to radical international demonstrations after Chicago’s Haymarket affair between police and a labor rally in 1886.

Today we celebrate with parades, barbecues, and that unofficial farewell to summer. I still think back to families lingering at picnic tables, kids racing through sprinklers one last time before school.

WHO ELSE CELEBRATES THE WORKING PEOPLE OF SOCIETY?

Labor Day goes beyond the USA and Canada. A handful of other places keep the same calendar: Bermuda and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Aside from the radical demonstration alluded to above, most of the world marks workers on a different day. International Workers’ Day, or May Day, falls on May 1 in more than 150 countries.

Of course there will be other countries that celebrate the workers. A few others set their own dates: the United Kingdom and Ireland observe an early-May bank holiday on the first Monday of May.

Australia’s Labour Day shifts by state (March, May, or October); New Zealand celebrates on the fourth Monday of October. Remember, their October is Springtime whereas it is Autumn here.

Japan holds Labor Thanksgiving Day on November 23; the Bahamas on the first Friday in June; Jamaica on May 23; and Trinidad and Tobago on June 19. It's so nice to have a day recognizing the workforce.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF US WHO WORK!

Wherever the calendar lands, the idea stays simple. Someone built the house, drove the truck, taught the class, or stocked the shelf. One Monday in September, we pause to notice. That still feels worth celebrating.
