Sometimes the things we say or do can have the opposite effect of what was intended.
Here in the UK our government actively encouraged us to buy and use diesel powered automobiles as they were deemed to be more environmentally friendly. But it turns out that they are far more polluting than other forms of transport. Now the powers that be want to scrap them and impose higher taxes for their use!
Prohibition when it was introduced in the USA was meant to decrease the drinking of alcohol. When enacted in 1918 there were some 800 bars recorded in New York. When it was repealed there were some 4,000 speakeasies operating!
The wars on terror and drugs have been known to actually increase both.
Some voracious weeds and unwanted plants in the garden when ruthlessly cut back and pruned will grow back with a vengeance.
