When building sites, trying to generate tables can be an absolute nightmare. Even some plugins that generate tables can be confusing.
Found this site that will generate the html code and then the CSS code.

To make it work - decide on your table requirements - rows columns etc.
Once you have generated this, copy the html code and place this either in your page/post (make sure your page is in text mode and NOT visual) or in your Widget area.
Then Copy the CSS code and place this in your style.css page.
Some themes have their own css editing function or you can download a plugin called 'Simple Custom CSS' and place it in there.
