Elections Day today
Today our people go to the polls to elect a new government for the next 5 years. After weeks of intense campaigning by both parties we have come to the real thing. Although we are being affected by a tropical storm people are put in large numbers voting for the candidate of their choice.
There are seventeen constituencies in the island of St. Lucia and there are three parties, although one party, which is quite new and have not been able to establish itself or convince the electorate of its seriousness, is only fielding one candidate. There are also a few independent candidates who are trying to win individual seats. Only one independent candidate has won his seat in the past 20 years and that candidate joined the wining party and helped form the government.
It is very difficult to predict which party is going to win because the electorate are very disappointed with the performance of both parties right now and it is about choosing the lesser of the two evils.
Later this evening when the votes are counted and whatever party wins the whole country will be in a celebratory mode with members of the winning party parading the streets, dancing and singing with flags and other paraphernalia of the victorious party.

We need a group of people with new ideas and creative policies but unfortunately the people that can make that contribution will not join the politics because the campaigns are about politicians attacking each other personally and hardly discussions about policies and the development of the country. And the people have been brainwashed to follow.
We have had accusations of corruption but unfortunately no one has been hauled to the courts and sent to jail so the same people keep forming the government every five years from both parties.
And even if we pay experts thousands of dollars to carry out investigations, these reports just sit of the shelves because both parties have skeletons in their closets and don't want to ruffle any feathers.
