Goal Setting

As we go through the WA training we are asked to set goals, are these goals set with enough real consideration and thought? I suspect in some cases they are no more than a guestimate of where we might like to end up, rather than a well thought out realistic goal. The chances of achieving a pie in the sky target without any structure behind it is remote; and I further suspect most will not be achieved. The goals will not be achieved because they are not really expected, and they will just be forgotten as we move on with the day to day stuff in our lives. How many can even remember the details of their goals set one month, two month or three months ago?

Achieving goals require two things: belief in a plan and expectation. Without either the goal is somewhat meaningless and will require luck rather than a real intention to achieve.

Plan: A goal should be both realistic and challenging, how real are your expectations of success, if the goal is unrealistic? A goal that isn’t challenging is not a goal at all.

Belief in your plan: If your goal is to be a millionaire (for example) then you must form a detailed written plan of how you will get there, how long it will take, and what action you must take every day towards achieving your goal. These steps along the way will show your progress, how do you know you’re on track without a plan? By forming a plan with all details taken into consideration, you are working towards something very real.

Expectation is the element most people forget when planning a goal. If you don’t truly believe you will reach your goal, and 100 percent expect to achieve it, then you probably will not, therefore you must have the correct mindset from the outset.

Possible or probable what do you want?

I have watched as people enter the numbers of referrals they hope to achieve to get to the Nevada seminar. Often with no more thought than, I need three hundred so that’s my goal. How many will achieve this number I wonder? Yet with some thought to form a structured plan, and a total belief in your own ability to achieve everything you have set your mind to, it is possible, in fact it is probable. Because, it is your beliefs that have brought you to the place you are today; and your beliefs are where you will end up in the future.

Food for thought!

Bill.

enjoy the part when you explain on writing a plan when making a goal.sometimes we expect things to happened by itself

Yes we do and then we wonder why we are not successful. Thanks for your comment.

Great post Bill! You are so right. We often just blurt out a goal and fail to take appropriate considerations on them. We should be setting SMART goals with specific measurements and plans attached to them. Thank you for the reminder! ~Kris

My pleasure Kris, thanks for your comments.

I set my goals in bite-size pieces so (a) I am not overwhelmed and (b) I can feel good when I achieve a goal and then I'm ready for the next.

Sounds like a man with a plan he believes in.

When I had my Company, Before the bankrupcy I hade a target a goal to reach, but when Everything happend so fast I lost my believe and trust so my plan fell down, but when I got here to WA I did new plans so now I have a target again to reach, thanks for the blog post :)

My pleasure Thomas, I believe life takes us to low places at times, so that we learn and acquire the strength we need to move forward. Bill

Thank you for the comment. I believe a goal exists fleetingly at first as a conceptual entity. It becomes a physical entity when you write it down in words you believe. As a physical entity it has a past, a present and a future. It can be nurtured and your success recorded. It becomes your goal and soon it takes on a life of its own through you.

I only wish I could write so eloquently my friend, its almost poetry. I look forward to reading your book when its available. Bill

Hi Bill, I'm with you all the way on this. There's nothing that works better for me than a written plan. Not just a shopping list, but a step by step strategic plan. It could even be based on a statement of mission, or mission statement.

A man with a plan is a man moving forward, thanks Peter I still find it strange to be in conversation with people across the world. (Old School)

Excellent points here Bob. I know I reworked my goals with the changing of the year and then also implemented using a weekly plan to make sure that I stay focused on achieving those goals. has worked wonders so far this year. Thanks for sharing!

My pleasure James, I wondered when I saw how WA worked, if I could add any decent contributions, as the days roll by I get more confident that I have a lot to give, as I receive from guys like yourself. Bill

and there goes a man with a plan for sure...and here is my offer up, some may notice the source....if you want to get to San Diego, and face in its direction, and move towards it, you will eventually get there...(paraphrasing) mind you, it does help if you have a map or ask for directions.

A fellow Brit will get this, men don't ask for directions. Maybe that's why allegedly women are better at achieving targets. lol:)
